New here looking for some info
I am thinking of buying a 2016=2021 tundra crewmax with the 5.7
they advertise up to 10k towing capacity.
I will tow a 7000lb camper and a car trailer with a 3-4000lb vehicle at times
what is your experience do they haul the weight good?
    brakes enough for the weight

    thanks

Beware of a comparison to the big 3. They helped develope the SAE J2807 towing standards but don't follow the guidelines and make up numbers bigger than their competitors. The Tundra may not advertise the biggest numbers but is the most capable of it's class. Their used to be a Toyota video where Toyota USA was pulling 320,000lbs in preparation for the Space Shuttle tow.

I have a # 4500 tt that I tow, I added a tranny cooler from Nick ( fantastic kit) and recently some heavy duty super springs to the rear. Tundra is a great truck, but if your going to pull that much very often I’d be looking for something bigger….

I have a 6500 pound travel trailer. Tundra tows fine and to me feels much more stable than the Silverado 1500 I had. Only add ons I had installed were shackles on the rear as it is a TRD Pro and sits a bit lower in the back to begin with.

However I will agree with Captain John's post above. You will quickly bust your payload or GVWR for the truck itself. Will take proper planning and loading of your trailer to distribute the weight so as to not bust your GVWR. Kind of a pain to worry about every time you take your trailer on a trip.... but then again so is cutting a check every month for a 2500 or 3500 RAM or Chevy/GMC and /or an F250 / F350 when you are not towing every day and sacrifice daily ride comfort etc...etc...etc....

For what it's worth.....if my trailer was heavier and we planned on towing often with it........I would look for a bigger truck for peace of mind. Of course then the gasser vs diesel discussion begins.

Search the forums here for lots of great information and or suggestions along with pics of folks Tundra towing set ups.

The Tundra tows my trailer (19’ at 3500lbs) like it’s not even there. One thing I will mention though, consider where your going. My 4Runner towed my 17’ trailer really well around the Great Lakes at 800’ but west of Denver, I was in 4th and 3rd. For every 1000’ you lose 3% horsepower. At 11,000’ my 4Runner’s 278Hp was down to 180Hp. Not enough for the Ike.

Excellent article! Now I prefer to be around 50% of rated capacity, but am actually at 40% according to a weigh at the CAT Scales.

You learn from experience, I may have been over capacity in the past.

I tow a 2800 BH Grand Design. It weighs in at around 6700 #’s with all my regalia. I went with the Blu Ox Sway Pro WDH. I did recently replace my stock Michelin’s for Cooper at3 XLT’s. The 10 ply tires are far superior for towing. They helped tremendously. I was a little concerned with the stock tires, but now I feel very comfortable towing our camper. The Tundra handles it just fine. MPG is around 9 when towing.

I bought a 2018 Limited with the 5.7 liter a couple of months ago to pull our approximately 6000-pound travel trailer, and it romps right along with it. I'm very pleased with how it handles the trailer. We use a Fastway E2 weight distribution hitch. So far we haven't had it outside Arkansas, but it handles the long inclines on Hwy 65 in northern Arkansas like a champ.

Oh yea, keep in mind ‘19 and up models DO NOT have tranny coolers. I know this is a worn out topic on this site, but thought you should know in advance. 2018 and older models have them.

I’m glad you liked the read. Some good information and questions how some manufacturers inflated tow ratings to make a buck.

Before buying a Tundra, I was definitely the diesel guy that was overloaded (when I had the slide in camper with). Air bags fixed everything right?

    Not all…but some.

What make and model is your slide in?

Mine was a Northstar 850SC and that was a bit more than what it was supposed to be. 1750 lbs dry was not even close. After being loaded up with water and supplies I had 80-90 lbs in my airbags.

Four wheel camper fleet - coolers, kids gear, water generators, it all adds up quickly!

Thanks for posting that article. Found it very informative. As the wife tells me how the cow eats the cabbage when it comes to "camping" amenities it becomes clear I'll probably be in the market for a 3/4 ton sooner than later. :spending:
