It's getting to be where they are all just looking for something they can add so that they can say they are better than the others, or have something that the others don't have. They've gotten to the point where the trucks already have everything they need so now we have to find something that will never really get used, but it's cool and will sell some trucks. Auto headlights, auto wipers, auto lane changing, they all fall into the same boat.

I've gotten used to automatic headlights, and I kinda like them. Auto wipers come in handy sometimes too. I'm not there with auto driving though.

I just think it's a complicated solution to a simple problem. If it gets dark, I reach up and flick the switch and it takes .5 seconds. If I can't see because of the rain, reach up and flick the switch and it takes .5 seconds. Or we can build sensors that can automatically detect it and spend and add an extra $500 to the price of the car. But then again, I guess you can say the same thing for manual vs electric windows and door locks.
My coworker had a kid the other day that was complaining that she had to drive her dad's car today and it sucked because it was a manual. He said I told her I was impressed that she could drive a stick shift since very few kids could anymore. She just looked at him and said no I mean manual headlights.

The slow agonizing death of the manual transmission is very sad to me. There is nothing like the feeling of engagement with the car you get from rowing through the gears. Dumped my manual 2018 Subie Crosstrek this summer because of the stellar used car prices, and I sure do miss being able to hop in that thing and tool around. It was an underpowered dog, but it was fun to wring every last ounce of hp out of it.

Yep, used to love driving a manual. I had a '91 4runner with a 5 speed in high school and college. I bought a Tacoma and had to get an automatic because I wanted the long bed. Took several months before I stopped trying to hit the clutch. I will still have dreams every once in a while about buying my 4runner back and driving it again.

Self parking is a big one for me. If it becomes standard, my kids may never learn to parallel park on their own. I love parallel parking. There is something very satisfying about sliding into a spot perfectly on the first try.

Every time I parallel park with my wife in the truck, when I come to a stop, I say this to myself, but always loud enough for her to hear: “Man, that was so good I don’t even need to pull forward to straighten out. I’m just...I'm just really impressed.” Then I slowly look over at her with a completely straight face. She can't possible roll her eyes at me any harder. She acts like she doesn't care at all, but I know she is waiting for the day when I don’t do it perfectly on the first try. I'm sure I'll never hear the end of it.

But that day has not come yet. Lol.

Yeah but do you know how much time it saves me to not have to do that? Why..it's got to be at LEAST 12 minutes over a whole year's time.

Well, technically if you compare starting MSRP on these and the Tundra, Toyota is prouder of theirs by about 2K....

My wife's car has the auto headlights, but I still turn them off every time I get out of the car so in order to get them to turn back on I have to switch it to auto so I just defeat the whole purpose of them.

My truck has them, and I agree in general - it's 'nice' to have, but it's not at all something that I absolutely have to have. I spend probably as much time turning them off as I do saying "Well, that's nice...." LOL

We don't know starting MSRP on the '22 Tundra. But you'd have to compare the base Tundra to a base Sierra with upgraded engine and some options for an even comparison.

I agree and disagree with you. These are all gimmicks, yes. When you have them, yes, they don't seem like much. The surprising thing is that when you get into a vehicle that doesn't have them you end up missing them.

IE: Two vehicles ago, I had auto wipers. I missed them when I got my next car and they didn't have them. This car had auto high beams though, which the more I use, the more I like.

I have old BMW motorcycles. When I want to be ornery and do everything myself, I go ride. Carbs, drum brakes, shitty headlights...we die like men.

I think you may be surprised how close in pricing the trucks get across the board once pricing for both come out, I agree the top trims are in a separate world than Toyotas and pricing is according, But mid grade 4x4 crew cabs across all the lineups aren't all that far apart and if you factor in normal pricing and ability to negotiate it does get a little closer.

My rule is that if it gets over 50K on any 1/2 ton truck, I am going to look at 3/4 tons and 1 tons...at least they have the ability to make money if you need them to.

Yup, still need 2022 Tundra pricing. The slow motion rollout to youtubers is a beating. They've had years to develop and deliver and it seems like some kind of cat and mouse game they're playing. I am glad to see GM is keeping the v8. Ram and GM would be an alternate choice for a truck to do truck things.

ya, I never thought I would be in this spot. I think Im screwed on tundra from now on, Ive had a bunch and I thought this 2022 would be my 5th one.

Im just pissed they did this 5 more inch deal.

At least the new GMC looks like a winner, at least until I can find the total length, LOL.

My dad bought this in 2017. Last year I believe, and we got it with the 6 speed. After a year of driving it, he bought a bolt as a daily driver. We decided to keep the miles off and keep it in the family. We think it’s the last NA V8 manual transmission sedan the US will see. Strange history (based on an E43 bmw, originally a Holden and a Pontiac, etc…).

But yeah, drive it and you’ll miss manual.

Yeah, once you get into the meat of the lineup the GMs are going to be more expensive than a similar Tundra but they'll be more willing to deal. I'm just saying for a real base model you can't straight up compare the domestics to Toyota or Nissan since they both only offer one engine so they don't have a cheap engine option, and they both put more tech standard on the lower trims.

I also think that the high trims aren't that much better than what Tundra offers, at least now. That Denali Ultimate is pretty and looks impressive, but I doubt it's 20k more impressive than a Tundra Platinum, if the Platinum comes in around 60. I mean, 80k is pushing TRX numbers, and you're not getting 702 hp out of it.

You could leave that in downtown Nashville with the windows down and the keys in the seat, and it would NEVER get stolen. No one in my generation knows how to drive a manual. Best millennial anti-theft protection out there.

The only thing I don't like about the auto headlights is how they come on during bright daylight hours as I pull into the garage. Those extra cycles are going to shorten their life so that's my reason for not using them.

As for the auto lane change feature, I agree that seems kind of silly and perhaps even a slippery slope to more inattentiveness overall but I found that on cars with the distance pacing cruise control (the nerd in me calls it "tractor beam cruise control") I get so lulled into not thinking about driving that I fail to notice I'm going 55 behind traffic and stuck in the right lane as everybody zips by in tight formation. The lane change feature would fix that for me so I could get back to texting or reading my book (just kidding on this last sentance!).

I'm curious how long it is until we see a Tundra with the Super Cruise style semi autonomous driving.

I can hear you all saying "I don't need the truck to drive itself" but it's got to be sweet on long trips.

I hope they keep away from the supercruise idea. The thought of people pulling trailers without their hands on the wheel infuriates and scares the shit out of me. Both driving and being behind trailers that have decided that they would prefer to either be in the lane beside you or 90 degrees to you I am extremely skeptical a computer can control those better. If the computer tries to keep the truck in the original lane it just won't work and people will end up in the ditch or worse.

The self driving with the vehicle alone, sure, but self driving with a trailer is just going to end up with more people who shouldn't be driving trailers driving them and not having a clue how to deal with the adverse conditions that can pop up any day.
