Windshield Chip DIY Repair

Got a really nice rock chip in the windshield right above the opening for the TSS-P sensors by the rearview mirror while driving on I-5 today. It wasn't too big and I sure as heck wasn't getting a new windshield at 3,500 miles, so I stopped by my local Advance Auto Parts and picked up a Permatex Windshield Repair Kit. I followed the directions 100% on the package, and the results were pretty great. To the trained eye, you can still see where the chip used to be, but otherwise it looks like a little piece of road debris or something. One thing I know for sure is that it is way better than it was to begin with, and after asking around a bit I'm 90% confident it will not spider out or expand. That glass resin is strong stuff. It's also nice that the remaining mark can't be seen from the inside, as it is covered by the TSS-P trim attached to the rearview. Hopefully this helps someone ~

Looks good, I had a chip right in my line of sight. I Had safelite fix it. Looked worse than the chip & when it rained there was about a 4in. blurry circle , had them replace the windshield 2 days later. Of course I'm in Florida so no charge for replacement. The Tundra had around 15,000 miles on it.

Good job. My windshield was fine and then on two separate trips my windshield got hammered and I have one decent chip and a bunch of really small ones that don't obstruction my vision but look like little bugs of the windshield. I thought of repairing the big one, but may just replace the windshield so I can start fresh if they are too much to replace. I haven't received a quote yet though, I'm sure they aren't cheap!

 

Just did another one on our Mercedes. Again, it doesn't look perfect, but it should prevent it frok spreading.

 

Thanks for posting this. I used some of Permatex’s stuff doing car restoration, but I had no idea Permatex made a chip repair product!

Old thread revival.
Got the first rock chip in my perfect windshield yesterday, I've never fixed or even had a chip fixed. I wanted to try and get it fixed before it started cracking,so I searched home base here at T.C and found this thread.




I couldn't find the permatex as was used by OP, but,I found this rain-x brand windshield repair kit.
The instructions say to apply in the shade and let cure in the sun, not happening! Lol
36f and cloudy, here we go!



After following instructions it took about 10 minutes to repair the chip. Worked great!!
I would say well worth it, all that is left is two little spots that can barely be seen.

I’ve used the rain-x one a few times with great results. Way more convenient then trying to schedule a repair. I highly recommend it, instructions are easy to follow.

We have a local roadside guy. He sets up at an intersection, you pull up he fixes on the spot $20. I have used him for my work truck 3 times with great results ( $60 ). How much are the do it yourself kits ? Might be more cost effective to do the DIY route.

 

They're like $15. This one I did on my Tundra over 3 years ago now is still holding strong. Have done it on many other chips and windshields too with great success.

 

$15 and a little time sounds like a smokin' deal !

I think my kit was $18, but everything up here cost more. Still well worth it.

 

I had glass coverage and they did it for free for me, even came to my house. Couldn't even see it. Not knocking it if you don't have full glass, just pointing out they will fix chips for free if you do

 

Unfortunately State Farm doesn't differentiate from Comprehensive and Glass coverage, and I have a $250 deductible. I didn't know these kits even existed!

So $150 to Safelite to fix my latest chip

Going to resurrect this thread because so far this winter I have two new small chips and I want to give it a try.

Any new info regarding product, process, results...?

 

I've had issues w/Safeline in the past. The joke running around Reddit is "Safelite despair, Safelite disgrace." LOL

 

Yep. They are not what they used to be years ago. They use cheap glass, and the workmanship is horrible.

 

Safelite did my chip once. Tech assured me it prevents from it spreading 90% of the time. Well I'm in the 10%. Months later I heard a snap and it cracked across the windshield.

 

Not to mention they are more expensive. The quoted me $200 to repair the chips. Other place in town, $90

 

Follow the directions, it's pretty foolproof. The original chip I fixed however many years ago is still good.
