2 WD front wheel bearings

I’m fairly sure I have a bad front right wheel bearing. I removed the caliper and the disc.
It had a little grinding and had play when I spun the spindle. Truck has 95K miles.
From my research, it looks like a technical and not easy job.
How do you guys address a wheel bearing job?

 

In the past, I've pulled the knuckle and taken it to shop to press a new one in.

What is the OEM Bearing?

Either brand is good, mine were Koyo. You'll definitely want to call around and find a shop that can do it, sometimes a 20 ton press isn't enough. If you pull the knuckle and bring it you'll only pay about an hours labor. I wish I kept the receipt to tell you what parts to look for. I replaced the bearings, the dust shield and I think the nut. Nut can probably be reused.

I used the Limited as a reference since they don't list the XSP as a separate model in this case. I dont think the wheel bearings would be different. Note that left and right part #'s are different.

As far as approach to the job goes unless you are prepared mechanically with the skill-set and the tools I would do as described and pull the knuckle only and let someone else qualified do it.

 

Its really a head scratcher that Toyota made bearings for these trucks such a pain. Most Toyota are a bolt in affair.

Had a local tire shop replace mine. Installed Koyo bearings with new nuts and reused the dust shields. Brought them the knuckles and they pressed them in for me.

Toyota's FWD cars are like this too. I just did the front bearing on my daughter's Matrix. It's honestly not too difficult a job if you have a press. But it does also require that you have some tooling (blocks, large sockets, etc.) to allow proper placement on the press.

That's a great video. I'd almost guarantee the bearing on that truck failed because the bearing wasn't properly supported when the hub was pressed back in.

Sounds like my 2wd front bearings need replacing too. Are there recommended parts to replace in addition to the bearings or just the bearings? Should I be ordering seals and spring clips etc?

 

Upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends, and sway bar links all attach to the knuckle that comes out. It's worth checking them while the knuckle is out. OEM only for the ball joints, and don't forget new bolts for the lowers.

Also, is your truck tan on the bottom?

Yeah they're definitely rare. Mine was done by the dealership I believe. I've only seen one other like it with the red and silver combo. I have seen a few red and tan however.
