Keyless Start Easy To Steal ?

I'd like to hear others opinions on the key less start being easy to steal. Looks like thieves can copy the RFID from your FOB from up to 300 feet away and make a duplicate. then come back at any time and steal your truck. I did a search and surprisingly cant find many threads discussing this issue.

A lot of newer vehicles are being stolen this way….

*EDIT* At first I thought it was BS until I saw it taking place on a security cam.

i have 2019 before they have keyless everything. I really got used to this on my lexus gs350. However for a truck i don't mind the key, also the immobilizer on toyota's i heard is one of the better security measures on the car itself.

 

You could also just leave the key in the freezer so that the freezer blocks out the signal...

 

I do this every night when I lock my truck. It works extremely well. Also pushbutton start and door entry is deactivated. Takes half a second to do and to rearm it just push any button. Best hidden secret.

I also added low floor board despite me hating them to make it harder to get under truck to steal the Cats. Its all just deference. I live in populated area, so I take these precautions.

 

Could you unhide this secret for the rest of us?

 

My bad. I thought it was known.

Stay close to your truck while outside. Push the lock button to lock the truck. Then push on keep fob lock button once and keep holding on to it. While holding on to lock button push unlock button twice. Everything will be deactivated and you won't be able to get in your truck if up place your hand by handle

 

So then when you come back you press the unlock on the fob and everything is reactivated? Wish I could just press lock on the keyfob and have it deactivate the push to start until someone unlocks using the keyfob unlock button.

You can push any button you like on key fob and the whole arms again and everything works when you want to get in.

 

My 2020 push start also came with a key, can that be used for anything besides unlocking the door, tailgate, and glove box? Does it have a chip and can be used to start the truck by holding it up to the start button? I'm away from the truck for another day to try it. If so that might be one mitigation, although it would be a hassle every time ,

 

It would interesting to see how that goes.

My guess would be the key would be used for emergency access into the vehicle, for instance a dead truck battery..

 

Answer to your first question is no.

Also when you deactivate everything using the mentioned trick; even if you got in the truck either by your key or the mini key in the key fob if you remove it, the push button start will not work. The push button start will not even work if you put the key fob against it to turn over the engine. Both key fobs will stop emitting a signal and won't be able to be copied by a thief at night unless you reactivate the system by pushing any key on any key fob again.

Believe me its not a hassle once you get used to it. I do it every night or if I'm out of town with the truck. That hassle is better than the truck being stolen.

Deactivating the key fob certainly works!! I wish Toyota and other manufacturers would have done a little more R & D on the theft issues. They made it too easy, although the criminals get smarter all the time. Something like garage door openers and rolling codes maybe?
