So I went to the shop the other day to talk about installing the nitro 5.29 front and back gears, guy told me he could do them but is almost impossible to get anyone from nitro to answer to order them called me back just now and told me Yukon came out with 5.29 gears for the tundra not even on the website yet for order. I’ve heard good things about Yukon all around so thinking about calling back and pulling the trigger any objections?

    Too many, but not enough....
would the old "never buy the first year of a car" apply to gears as well?

I wouldn't see any issue with going for the Yukon gears. Like you I've seen lots of positive reviews for their products.
But if you're wanting them from a manufacturer that's been making them for a bit longer then Motive gear and Revolution gear also offer 5.29s.
I have the revolution 5.29s on my truck as well as a few other members on here.

I have only heard good things about Yukon. I would stay away from Motive. I had a set of Motive 4.88's installed and the rear was so loud that you could hear it over the radio. When they swapped them out for another brand, I could not believe how bad the machined finish was on them.

I’ll ask him about the revolution’s I have never had a truck regeared but I threw on 37s and I tow a camper here and there. Would I be able to tell a huge difference after the install?

Does any other gear manufacturer offer the entire package with master install kits like nitro does?

Yes huge difference, especially with 5.29s which imo is the way to go if you'll regear at all (and especially for 37s). You'll have 25% more torque, and 5th and 6th gear will actually be useful now.

I blew up 3 sets of Yukon in my 03 tundra. I blew 12 rear ends all together. 3 were Yukon’s fault. 3 were Detroit lockers. The other 6 were all of the other brands combined together. Since I upgraded to an 07+ rear end in that truck, the rear end hasn’t blown ever again.

The Yukon’s blew on the first desert trip within the first whoop section. 100% of the time. The Detroit’s blew on the highway. The other 6 times had several desert trips and thousands of miles on them.

moral of the story, the 8” rear end was too small for my set up. But Yukon definitely blew first and hardest.

there’s 3 places where gears come from. China. Korea. India. USA doesn’t make gears anymore. You don’t want the Chinese gears.

So this company makes their own gears and the manufacturing process is very thorough.

    https://www.crownracegears.com/specifications.html

They sell the gears on other site that it looks like they own. It looks like Yukon is their alternative if they don't make a specific size. That speaks fairly highly of Yukon to me.

Back 2009-2013ish I could have a set of Yukon ring and pinion for a first gen tundra delivered for literally $12. I haven’t priced them lately since I wouldn’t run them.

not trying to put down any one company, they’re obviously successful in making money. They’re very profitable to resell too. Just not something I recommend to guys.

So guy called me back today made mistake Yukon didn’t have the 5.29s told me he still can’t get ahold of nitro but revolution has the 5.29s in stock with master install kit so thinking about going with them but now think I should go ahead and install a locker to any suggestions?

I did a powertrax limited slip when I did my gears. Food for thought if you don't strictly want a locker. If you're doing gears now's the time to do anything else to the diffs too.

I really don’t know much about them what I’ve gathered is they make both tires spin when you full send it but yeah I figured pay less in labor now instead of paying more when I want them later

Yes, the locker will make it so both tires always spin. The downside to a selectable locker like a grizzly or arb where you can turn it on and off is you have to turn it on, it's not passive. So if you floor it and hadn't planned to do that so never engaged the locker, you'll still spin a tire. Where as a limited slip is always engaged, and if it's a good limited slip it'll effectively lock both tires together when you gun it and then will act like a normal open diff the rest of the time. Where that's an issue is if you're offroad for instance and lift a tire, the limited slip may not want to send much if any power to the tire in the air (for example the powertrax locks up more with more power, so if you're crawling it's not doing anything until you give it a lot of power which isnt going to be smooth when you're offroad).

Different strokes, pros and cons to both. The limited slip is better than nothing off-road and actually helps quite a bit, but you won't get the forced power delivery of a locker. Flip side is a locker doesn't help on road unless you're constantly turning it on and off, where as the LSD will automatically kick in when it sees slippage and yet be street friendly the rest of the time. If you do mostly street stuff, I would do the limited slip--if you do crawling and stuff I would get the locker. Lots of threads and stuff to research, personally the powertrax LSD has been awesome and I can light up both tires all day and still go around corners with zero binding, and I never have to flip a switch or do anything.

There's other limited slip options too, like an Auburn. But from my research the auburn uses preloaded parts to make it lock up and then allow the diff to open for turning, and from what I read there's been cases of those components wearing down and then the limited slip doesn't do anything anymore. Where as the powertrax used internal gears to lock up, which in theory means there's no consumable/wearable parts. With that said, the powertrax hasn't been out anywhere as long as the Auburn. But that was enough to convince me to go with the powertrax, and I have about 20k on it since installing at the beginning of the year and it has performed flawlessly and taken the power of the supercharger without skipping a beat. So there's other options you may want to look at, but personally with revolution 5.29s and a powertrax I have zero regrets or issues.

I have had the Powertrax in the rear for about 1000 miles and like it so far. You can tell immediately that it is working and it feels like driving a tight limited slip. If you go this route remember, no synthetic oils or friction modifiers. I honestly think that this is a reason for a large number of Auburn failures. More gear oils are either synthetic and/or have friction modifiers than not and simply looking for the GL5 approval is not enough.

snivilous, how has your Powertax been off road?

Ive only been in one or two situations where the truck was flexed out a bit in 2wd and with some power it locked up and kept moving. I try to avoid offroading the tundra outside of normal dirt roads and dirt trails, though it's definitely noticeable on those and no one wheel burn outs in the dirt anymore!

I've also guinea pigged myself, and have only run synthetic gear oil (Amsoil severe gear) with the powertrax. From my understanding of how the LSD works I don't believe the friction modifiers actually hurt the LSD, I think they may make it not lock up as hard/early but it doesn't make sense to me that the diff would get hurt from it. Im not saying to do that, obviously it's against what powertrax suggests, but in my use case so far I've had no issues with its function and feel better overall using an easy to find and arguably higher performance fluid than what powertrax requires. We'll see what happens in the long run!

Sorry for bringing up an old thread but I can’t find a 5.29 Revolution kit. I checked their website and I’m only seeing a 4.88 master kit. Can you let me know how and where you got your 5.29? Thanks

I got them installed probably six months ago and everything seems to be fine I had the grip pro installed also and I noticed a difference big time breaking. Everything went smooth took it back after 500 miles for a new oil

Oh man, I got my Revolution 5.29s back around October 2020 through a group buy on here that went south fast.

Yea I'm also seeing that Revolution doesn't have a full kit of the 5.29s available right now. You could try calling them to see if they have any timeline on when they'd have them available.
