Toyota could make a good 3/4 ton work truck, but nobody would buy it.

So they make what (barely) sells, plush crewmax tundras with leather and a 5 foot bed that will do 90mph quietly on the way to work.

Yes, carrying 2350lbs in the bed, or towing 7800lbs braked, with 150hp. I guess my Tundra is formally roasted. Plus it has the comfort of a John Deere Gator, so the wife and kids will like riding in it.

Hilux is a donkey, which is not an insult at all. Inexpensive and economical, able to carry a lot; but not comfy to ride, nor fast, because that's not necessarily what an ozzy might like.

Toyota DOES know the market here.

Acrimony aside, and hoping you have a nice evening - - good on ya' mate.

Check out Bound For Nowhere on YouTube. They built a 9,000lb Tundra rig with a flatbed and a big truck camper on it. I bet it weighs more with full tanks, too. Factory semi-floating axles. This truck has a GVWR of 7100lbs and axle ratings of 4000/4150lbs. They’ve been driving it with no issues for 2 1/2 years. Seems like solid evidence that the Tundra is underrated.

Also, all you’re doing here is showing that you didn’t do any research before you bought your truck. I understand that can be frustrating. Take advantage of the resale and get an HD truck that suits your needs.

I have irrefutable proof that the 2022 Tundra will surely have a higher payload equal to the mighty Hilux. It'll have 6 lugs instead of 5!

Fuck man, how dare my Tundra not fly like an airplane! Oh yea, 2 different things .
We're not a 3rd world country, we literally don't need anything more for a higher price tag. My uncle hauls excavators with tundras. They're just perfectly fine for the states. Seems like a troll thread.

I'm not trolling, more expressing my frustration because I've used Hiluxes a lot and the Tundra just seems a cut below them. But it seems that that my uncensored frustration is unwelcome here, so I will tone it down a bit.

I'm still sad because I can't have an 8th gen Hilux.

So, my edited controversial opinion: The Tundra is a great truck until you experience the cream of the crop that is not sold here and then you'll never be able to see it the same way again.

The thing is, a small minority of us do have third world roads and wish for 3rd world trucks to drive over them.

Since its not sold here, what exactly should we do? Do we just complain about something we have no control over, or do we move to those places that offer them?

    Oh, I tried.

Diesel for me is out. Sad because I almost like Cummins and Duramax. Also, my brief experience with domestics:
Ram: Really good trucks for a little while, but they seem to fall apart sooner than I like.
Chevy: IMO might be top of the heap right now. That said, I keep hearing about electrical gremlins and cylinder deactivation woes. Plus I once had a pretty new Silverado that would randomly get stuck in 4WD.
Ford: Also pretty good if you get a good one. The best interiors IMO. Unfortunately, too hard to work on, plus random electrical and other issues. Also the ones in my price range usually have the infamous 5.4 triton. Ford has had some great engines, but I don't think that was one .

    And that brings us to:
Toyota: Really, really good drivetrains and servicability, in frame that is not as good as the drivetrain.

At the end of the day, we all gotta pick our poison. The fact that so many people don't need to haul heavy stuff over terrible roads is, in my book, a good thing. For those of us that still do... we choose what we're willing to deal with. I, personally, deal with narrow roads and tight turns on a regular basis which is why my old Hilux is so invaluable.

If your Tundra does what you need it to on a regular basis, that's great. I mean that without sarcasm. I may possibly still feel whiny until I have a modern-ish Toyota pickup that could go where my Hilux does and tow even half as well as my Tundra does. This vehicle exists, but it wouldn't be profitable to sell in the USA.

    All of that said...
I think my posts in this thread came across more negatively than I intended. I apologize for any feathers ruffled. I will keep my whining lower key in the future.

We all have a difference in opinion on what Toyota should or shouldn’t be. The staff gets that and gives most people some rope (so to speak). What we can’t have is members telling each other to STFU and what not. If you are not intelligent enough to have a good debate, please do not participate in the discussion.

Personally, I would like to see a more “rugged” Toyota lineup in addition to what is offered now. When you see one of these rigs up close you realize real quickly why they might have better capacity ratings.

I'm a little confused, so please set me straight here. My last two trucks prior to the Tundra were a GMC, and two Chevys. Was a huge fan of the older Bowties, but had nothing but problems with the last three. After doing lots of research for Months decided to try the Tundra, I knew the payload and towing capacity stats before I pulled the trigger, and the truck I bought is exactly the truck I got as advertised. Not sure what else one can do to buy a truck that fits your needs in this very competitive truck market.

Personally, in the 1/2 ton segment it’s hard for me to go anywhere else besides Toyota. The new GM’s are disabling the cylinder deactivation due to shortages, so that would be an option for myself now.
