Interesting thing about the creosote contamination - to mitigate it they will blow air through the tainted ground water and it undergoes a reaction that breaks it down and returns it to non-volatile compounds. It’s one of the few industrial contaminations that can.

We did a mitigation project along the Columbia River out near Astoria at the site of an old plant. Dug a ditch around the site that went down 60 feet and filled it with bentonite clay to form a barrier to keep it from leaching out to the river and then graded the site to a 20’ wide x 30’ deep trench down the middle.

Running along the bottom of the trench was a series of 2” hdpe pipes with 1/8” holes in them every 6”, and that was all hooked up to a manifold fed off a blower. The trenches were filled with 2” round rock, and then fabric and sod on top. Then they put sprinklers in to keep ground damp full time. That blower ran for 10 years, at which point the sampling stations all showed no contamination.

It was one of the more unique projects I’ve done in my career.

One of the first things I did when I bought our house was to add a flagpole. Even though the house needed lots of work, the Wifey agreed it was a must. Her father was an Air-Force pilot who flew combat missions in WW2, my father and his brother are both Marines, and one other uncle was a SeeBee who built airfields in the S. Pacific and saw some horrific things that changed him to the point that he was never the same after returning. Sometimes we take it for granted how good we have it, I know I do.

That's awesome. Apparently y'all are smarter than here. They, the EPA's contractor, dredged the hell out of it and said it's still there. Filled with some local dredge spoils, sand from a few local inlets, and said don't disturb the bottom. A local conservation group, Elizabeth River preservation society, came in and planted some living shorelines. All I can say for sure is that the fish I catch there no longer have cataracts or wierd lesions. Good job.

 

I can’t take any credit for the process or the design. We just did the installation.
