2016 , so I went to lower the spare tire and finally realized that I need to use the "security" socket tool to lower it...I got that to fit but of course it won't turn, Soaking it with penetrating oil..Is there a way to get the regular Hook on the tool end to fit into the hoist, looks like rubber is blocking the slots...Thanks.

    Alot of them
That's a spare tire lock that someone installed on your truck. The trucks don't come with them from the factory.

I think you have replace the whole hoist. Ran in to this terrible design on my buddy’s Tacoma.
The lock appears to be pressed in there very well. May be able to get it with a bunch of work but a new hoist is only $50 so not worth the hassle and worth the price to not have to fight with the key matching up on the side of the highway or a muddy trail.

That black hook between your hand and the security socket is what you insert into the opening to lower the tire. It doesn’t actually hook in just insert the rounded end into the opening and turn slightly to make it engage and then unwind the mechanism to lower the tire.
Save that security lock so you can remove a tire.

Nope you have to put the key on the end as shown and line it up blindly and by feel only to crank it down. The lock is pressed into the slot that the hook makes contact with for us that don’t have the lock.
It is a gigantic pain in the nut sack!!

    Beyond silly.
Took us like 20 minutes to line it up properly. That picture there is no tire so you can easily see it.
With the spare in place there is no way to see the key/lock orientation.

Super silly and stupid IMO. The wheel locks were a pain when the special socket had snapped & I'm not far from The McGard factory and got a replacement. Got rid of those.. Now this..after owning the truck for 5 years, shame on me I guess for not doing this sooner..May have to cut the chain and replace it. Thanks..

I ran into this when I bought my truck, as the PO didn’t include the security socket to lower the spare.
Because the plate that holds the wheel onto the chain has a spring, I used a pry bar to pry down one side of the plate and used a hammer to tap the plate over until it was off-center and tilted enough to pop through the center hub of the wheel. Once the wheel was off I could remove the lock so the standard square end of the jack tool lowers the wheel.
Mine is just the standard steel wheel, not sure how an aluminum wheel would hold up to that steel plate sliding across it.

I attach my drill to mine to make it light work. I only have the hook not security bit. Best of luck.

Update, I had ordered a used one from Ebay, it got cancelled by the seller and refunded. So for kicks, I heated the outside of where the security lock fits in the hoist , grabbed security lock with vice grip, hit the assembly with a hammer and it came out.. so I'm back in business with original setup..

Thank you agrestic1! I also tried for 20 mins to lower the tire with just the hook, thinking it was for the tires.

Nope, it seats in the mechanism and is there to keep the spare tire from being lowered by miscreants and ne'er-do-wells.

Yeah, this took me way too long to realize than I'd like to admit. The security bit was lodged in the tire iron bag and I didn't realize it. After finally attaching it, the hoist was easily engaged. I dropped the spare on my '20 TRD Pro to prep and inspect it.

Here's an image of the tire iron with security key inserted into the hoist

Wish mine looked that clean. I removed my security bit..
