Fan clutch on 4.7 AC- special tool required? Any DiY videos?

I may be replacing the fan clutch on my dads 2001 and I was wondering if a special tool is required. Also I can’t find any videos for the 4.7, only the V6, which just seems to be a matter of removing bolts without removing the fan shroud or draining coolant. Can anyone help me out? I’d like to save him the over $300 at Firestone and do it for him. Thanks.

Thanks! I hadn’t considered looking at a different procedure video. When is this 32mm clutch removal tool necessary? Is it only for newer Tundras?

That tool helps with the removal of the clutch, it’s not necessary as you can see on the video. Why are you replacing your fan clutch if you don’t mind me asking? Overheating?

 

The fan is constantly on with that roaring noise. It sounds like it’s always engaged. Should I be looking at something else ?

 

Those 32mm clutch fan tools are for other makes. No modern Toyota uses them

Constant roaring is a sign of a stuck on clutch (or your engines just running too hot)

 

12mm bolts for the pulley and 10mm nuts holding the blade on. You can technically do it without removing the drive belt

 

If you’re hearing a constant loud roaring/air sound replacing your fan clutch will most likely fix it, but it could also be your fan bracket. Make sure your cooling system is working properly, an engine that’s running too hot can also cause those issues as the fan will try to work harder to keep your engine from overheating. I highly recommend using an OEM part, Aisin makes the OEM part for our trucks. I believe the part number for your truck is FCT-024, double check if you decide to go that route.

 

I may have missed it, but is there an easy test you can do to see how your fan clutch is performing? I remember reading something about spinning it by hand. Also, is everyone replacing with an OEM unit or aftermarket?

to check for a locked up clutch, with the engine running COLD start, after 30 seconds or a minute (they take a minute to unlock after sitting), a wrapped up newspaper "SHOULD" be able to stop the fan.. but typically, you'll hear the roar
