I worked with a guy who served in the RAF for 20 years as an aircraft service technician before coming to America to and I quote "Get away from all those other God damned British mother fuckers."

He explained to me that when working on aircraft, especially military aircraft that every repair is done by the book. If the repair isn't in the the book you don't repair it, you replace it. He wasn't very imaginative when it came to repairs as a lot of our repairs here are by the seat of your pants.

."Try this. Oh, that didn't work? Well try that."

It was tough on old Mick. He'd been blown up, and was very set in his ways. Hard to get away from the book.

 

I've never been offended by a picture. Until today.

It's a classic. Right up there with Airplane, The Jerk, Caddyshack, etc. Back when movies were funny

 

Chatting with our electrician apparently every in ground box at the soccer and track are the same way. So about 8 all together, he's apparently reported it to EHS a few times but it's still "on the list" for repair.

 

I guess whoever did it never heard of sealtight. Or carflex. Or the NEC.

 

Even worse the "project manager" who's supposed to inspect all contractor work missed it, along with the undersized irrigation lines, and the missing heat tape in the hot box which lead to a 3" main cracking in January.

 

I had a coworker get zapped in the taint when trying to step over an e fence. He stands about 6'4" and thought he was in the clear, but God had other plans that day.

was looking at a fiberglass camper....came across this Scamp and noticed something scary/hilarious in the listing picture...some people.

Stayed in one of those two weeks out of the month for a while doing an out of town work assignment. Very small space inside. had the shit/shower/shave bathroom in the middle. I couldn't sleep normal in the over the hitch bed, had to sleep diagonal. I'm only 5'10". I pulled it with my buddy's Dodge 2500. Had a ball hitch mounted in the bed. Like a hybrid between a gooseneck ball and a fifth wheel hitch. The Dodge was overkill. The guy that delivered it was driving a Ford Ranger.

 

But then what will everyone think my vanity plates mean?

Paul is a really awesome human, too. I met him through my friend Craig ~15yrs ago. When Craig moved away, I lost touch with that entire vein of friends/acquaintances.

Generally speaking, everything he made was super solid. Good example of someone who knew the weak points from using it, loved solving problems, and was able to machine out solutions which fixed the problem without breaking the bank.

I wasn't hackin at the guy, or downplaying the weight of fatherhood or anything like that. He said himself he was overwhelmed. No shame in that. The general idea of 'anyone giving up on their dreams,' is what I was throwin stones at. That was meant to be a seperate thought. People give up on their dreams for all sorts of reasons, I like to encourage them not to when at all possible.

 

Because there is no true suffering without hope.

Wasn't accusing you of that. The internet lacks tone, it's likely my words came across for you as something they weren't intended to be.

I'll just say on other thing, with no accusation again, and sorry in advance if it sounds all serious and shit versus my usual BS humor. Just some food for thought.

Suicide rates are really high amongst us men, almost 2x to women. From the day we open our eyes the 1st time 'til the day we die, we've an insane amount of expectation and pressure applied on us because we're "men". We're expected to start being "men" from the time we walk, need to know how to do every damn thing, fix every damn thing, protect every damn thing. It's a hell of a lot of pressure. And there's always someone to say you ain't "man enough" if you let on that it's getting to you.

So we often don't say anything directly. We don't talk, it builds up. With that pressure comes stress, depression, anxiety and sometimes crazy thoughts, thoughts that can leave us saying and doing some really stupid shit. It's important we remember that, and stick with each other when one of us starts talking crazy shit like "giving up on dreams". I know I lost my brother (my idol) to that shit and I also suffer from periodic depression too, as do some of my other dudes, we openly talk about it.

It's OK to poke at someone when they say crazy shit. Just remember, there may be something deeper going on there, sorta like with my brother. We had no idea what was really brewing inside that cranium making him start talking crazy. Stress got to him. Don't hesitate to be the fellow dude who steps up and reaches out to someone talking crazy, either to challenge whether they really mean it, or better yet, just to ask, "You OK, bro? Anything you want to talk about? Anything I can do to help?"

Last thing you want is to have the hindsight of, "Damn. I knew something wasn't right. I wish I'd have said something". Trust me. I've been feeling that way about my brother for a good 30 years now.

Well, naturally! But I always think a big sheet of raw aluminum looks out of place compared to one painted to match the bumper. Some years from now when my to-do list reaches bumpers I plan to do the same.
