Hey there, New to forum. Picked up a pandemic special 2016 Toyota Tundra with 89 K, 5.7 liter V-8 and 6 speed auto trans. Not sure whether auto trans has ever been serviced. Trans seems to shift fine.

Can anyone offer advice on the following as I need to get it done soon for peace of mind:

Should first service be a complete flush of the 15 quarts of trans fluid ?

Or should it be a drain of the fluid and filter change?

I am dealing with a local shop that is pushing hard for the complete fluid change. Does anyone have any real world examples of what can go wrong with complete fluid changes? Thank You kindly.

There are a lot of complete fluid change horror stories here and around the web and I would hesitate before doing one and am hesitating before doing one myself.

I think that depends on the mileage. 89K is not that much.

Agreed but there seems to be no real consensus about the full change other than it can be risky from what I read?

I have not seen anyone suggest against a simple drain and fill at 4 quarts but a lot of janky results with a flush and fill.

Enough to give me pause at this point.

My Dad worked for and retired from GM Hydramatic. He was a firm believer of never touching a sealed transmission. He never had any issues with any of his truck transmissions. I'm probably the opposite and will be draining and filling this thing for life.

I would do a complete fluid change.
I have always done the complete on them and added a magnefine filter on the line that goes to the trans cooler and have had good success with my high millage trans.

last trans I did this on was a 97 F150 with 200k without a prior known trans service. put filter on first and after 5k I did a complete drain, fill and new filter. That oil was nasty burnt and the filter(I cut open) was full of metal shavings and gunk. got another 45k out of the truck and sold it and had no problems with trans ever.

Drain and fill. Leave the filter alone.
