I cannot find a check engine light on my 2001 base/standard cab.
This is the one without a tach, etc.
    What am I missing?

I can't even seem to find a picture of a cluster with no tach on a tundra only a Tacoma. If you have a pic please share.
Chances are its burned out from being on for a long time. May need the bulb replaced. Do you have codes showing up when using an OBD scanner?

I've had the cluster apart to clean it, and I guess I don't know what the symbol looks like.
    I'll take it apart again.

    No codes from my reader...

That info is on the following page...oddly labeled "Malfunction Indicator lamp" instead of the more common "Check Engine light" (CEL)

It says “CHECK” and has engine symbol. When I was switching to LED way back when and had the cluster out, I took the bulb out and put flashlight over hole, you can see symbol/words on other side shining thru

    Thanks for the info, everybody.

If I am understanding this correctly, when you turn the ignition to "on", and the dash lights go through their bulb check...the CEL does NOT light up?
That doesn't sound right, as that is an important bulb...

It definitely should light up. It should stay lit up until you start your engine. Seems like most likely your bulb is blown. Or loose connection at socket or somewhere else. I have hit the top of the dashboard and had a check engine light bulb start working again on a tundra.

It’s not uncommon for propel to remove the bulb on the check engine light if they’re selling a car with a problem, or if the lights been on long enough, the bulb can be blown.

No, sorry...I guess sarcasm doesn't translate well in text. I meant it like "duh...it's the one that's burned out".

The CEL/MIL should illuminate when the key is rotated to the RUN position before starting the engine as a means for checking the lamp functionality.
