Hey folks. It's obvious I have a significant leak from the power steering rack. I tried using the Stop Leak fluid but with zero luck.

Has anyone replaced the rack themselves? Dealer wants $1500 to replace. Local shop wants $1300. Any suggestions? I've replaced a decent amount of things on this Tundra and my former Tacoma but haven't heard of anyone doing this one themselves. Am I in for a slough of swear words and a headache or is this a doable project?

I had this happen when I first got my '04. Turned out to be that one of the supply lines was bad, and easily replaced,

I would do it myself. Ordering a new OEM rack online from the dealer is typically around $500. I guess it all depends upon how you feel about removing the existing plumbing. Is there a lot of rust on the underside?

I had mine partially out when I replaced my lower control arms. I Think I could handle the rest of it. Only thing I'm worried about is breaking a rusty fluid line.

If you're capable, a new OEM rack and replacing it yourself is by far the best option. Just be aware there's two versions, one for about $400 and one for about $700 IIRC. Hopefully you have the half-price option. I think the difference may be AC vs. DC.

Replacing the steering rack is actually pretty easy on these trucks, especially if you've done other work on the truck. Remember to center the rack before installing and count how many rotations the tie rods have to get the alignment close. I went with the detroit axle rack with lifetime warranty when you send your rack back in the prepaid box. Had it on for 2 years or so and its been perfect.

I just had this done last month. I might have slightly overpaid, which is annoying. I paid $1780 + tax.

Power steering pump, rack and pinion, mounting bushing, steering gear, alignment, and labor.

I've slowly started looking into this also for my 2003. The prices you listed are about what I was quoted.
I think depending on how bad the leak is, you can probably let it go for a bit. Mine doesn't leave any evidence on the ground, so I'm not in a rush. So you might be able to wait a bit if needed.

But, as I was looking into this; I think you are better off trying it yourself and getting an oem rack. I would also consider lower control arms (or just bushings) while you're at it. That's what I'm looking to do when I finally tackle this.
