Towing problems- No transmission cooler on 2020 TRD Pro

Toyota sells vehicles in the middle east. I would love to know if theirs still has trans coolers

 

130 mile round trip in mountains. Mileage like this is not uncommon for me since I went with the cooler and AMSOIL “Fuel Efficient” trans fluid. I get 16-17.5 city. I’m very happy with my trucks mpg.

I must’ve read it wrong too. I assumed the reported MPG was with towing a 45’, 16,000 LB 5th wheel behind the Tundra through the mountains.

 

Man i need to change my oil and add a cooler!!

Awesome. How did you swap over to Amsoil, did you do a complete flush or just several drain and fills? Any links to the type of Amsoil you used.
I wonder if anyone else who swapped is seeing this type of mileage.

Edit: I see you had a flush done, I'll probably would do drain and fills. Anyone know when doing drain and fills how many you would need to do to remove most of the old WS fluid and mileage between them?

 

If we see these mpg, we don’t need the 2022 tundra

 

The guy I bought my cooler and parts from said he did 4 drain and fills and suspects he got rid of 90% of the WS.

Edit: the fluid AMSOIL recommended for my ‘21 Tundra says “Fuel Efficient” on the container.

 

I call BS on the info for this pic. That's a tank average, not a trip mpg, and it's barely down on the tank. I can go fill up, cruise the freeway downhill and post up stupid high numbers too. I get better MPG than most of what is reported here, and the Tundra may well be capable of 21 MPG, but I think this has been intentionally misrepresented.

 

I’ve “misrepresented” nothing. I took a picture of the readings, said it was not uncommon post cooler install/fluid flush, and then stated I was happy with it.
I top off my tank (3 gallons after pump shutoff) at every fill which is why the gauge in the photo is high.
That’s it.

 

3 gallons after pump shut off? There are a lot of threads about not being able to fill up due to the evap canister or roll over valve. It seems to be an expensive fix that most attribute to overfilling the tank.

Thanks for the info, I'd never heard of this issue before. My truck always seems to be a bit past the full mark when the pump auto stops.

 

Years ago when I had a 2010 with the 46 gallon transferflow tank, I’d always squeeze in 1-2 gallons after the pump shut off. I had never heard of this issue. My 2018 never took much more after pump shut off. Then I read about this issue and now I just let it be.

I just filled up..tried to get another gallon. Not happening. 3 gallons?

 

I was only able to get more in when I had the transferflow tank. I can’t get any more in my 2018 either.

Maybe the pump he is at is just recirculating most the gas and charging him for it.

 

Thanks for the info. I’d never heard of a charcoal whatever, or a roll over valve till now. I will definitely check into this.

I trickle the gas into the tank after it clicks off. Some pump handles are easy to do this with, others are not. And yes, I can easily put in 3 more gallons and even 3.5 one time after the initial pump shutoff. All it takes is few minutes and a little finesse.

I’ve done this with every car or truck I’ve owned for the past 25 years including ‘07, ‘13, ‘16 Tundras and a ‘06 Taco and not once had any malfunctions.

Back to the original thread....looking forward to towing by my camp trailer now that my transmission is where I want it to be.

Just back from a 900 mile freeway trip pulling my GeoPro G20BHS with my 2021 Tundra.

My trailer is about 4300 lbs loaded. Ambient temps were anywhere from 70 deg F to 100 deg F. I monitored transmission temps the entire time. As I don't have a transmission cooler, my transmission has been running at about 204 deg F without a load. I've noticed very little (if any) impact on the TF temperatures by the outdoor temps.

The below is on the freeway with speeds ranging from 60 to 65 mph.

For one leg of the journey, I used only S4 and T/H mode. I know some on here have said that T/H mode doesn't work on S4 but the difference feels clear to me and I am certain that it does work in S4. In S4 I pretty much always ran at 222 deg F. On long inclines in the heat it could get up to about 226 but I didn't see it go any higher than that. It would then settle back down to 222.

The next day I ran mostly S4 but did go up to S5 on declines and flat areas without headwind. In general it would inch up to about 226 deg F in 5th gear, with stints up to 231 deg F. If I went back to S4, it would settle back down to 222 within a few miles.

So for my particular towing setup, I was only saving about 4-9 degrees F by staying in S4 versus using S5.

On my way home I just stayed in S4, as even the S4 temps were higher than I wanted, but more so because I just like the way it pulls and doesn't ever struggle or hunt while in 4th on the freeway.

 

Can anyone explain the engine being "recalibrated" I think starting 2019?

I am wondering whether adding the cooler will have any effect on driving quality...?

 

Nothing changed in the engine. The transmission was supposedly reprogrammed to manage temps better. Things like shift points and keeping the torque converter locked more often under load.

 

Bought my 2021 Tundra CrewMax back in March and I do a lot of towing with my boat that is roughly 3500lbs. I too was concerned about not having a trans cooler and looked at multiple shops in my area if they would be willing to install the trans cooler. They all came back with the same answer, that they talked to the local dealership about warranty and that it would be voided even using manufacturer parts from previous years. Also, that they would not be liable for any issues after the install. I decided to just ride it out for the summer and see what temps I get while towing, if they were high I would proceed with the external trans cooler. I have kept the truck in S4 & T/H mode each time towing and never saw temps higher than 216, this includes a 4 hour drive one way and 4 hours back the next day, in 90 degree weather. I have done over 13 trips towing to and from with no concern (roughly 3 hours each one way). I actually have seen higher temps, up to 220, while in D without towing anything. At least for me keeping it in S4 & T/H mode keeps the temps at 216 or lower for my amount of trailer weight. Just wanted to share this, in case anyone is concerned about towing boats or trailers under 4000lbs. I can't attest to the temps when towing higher than that though.

My 2020 was running at almost 240° with an empty dump trailer around town. I installed the cooler from Nick a month ago and the temps remain much lower all of the time.

As for the warranty, Toyota would have to provide a reason that the cooler damaged the transmission. That would be quite hard to do since the kit that I installed is almost entirely what they had been running up until 2019. The only part that is different is the cooler itself. All of the lines and the thermostat are Toyota.

 

I think the issue is Toyota can say what they want. If they decide that day the cooler is the issue then I don’t know what your next move is. They know most people don’t have the discretionary funds to compete with them in a court room for very long so what’s stopping them from just saying no to warranty work because you installed the cooler?
