Hi. I am hoping someone may have some thoughts on this. About 5 years ago I installed the hewitt tech sais bypass kit with the block off plates to clear some sais related codes that were keeping my truck in limp mode. The instillation went well, the codes cleared, and have been fine for the past five years. Now I suddenly have a million trouble codes relating to the EVAP system including sais related codes, I don't know where to begin. The couple of shops I have taken to won't touch it unless I agree to remove the bypass kit and restore the sais to original to the tune of like 3k dollars, and I'm not even sure that would fix the issue...any ideas? The codes that are on now are : p0101, p0441, p0445, p1442, p1445, p2441. The truck runs 100%, and is not going into limp mode. I hate to have to move on from it as it only has 130k miles and runs perfect but I cannot get inspection sticker with these codes on.

Have you reached out to Hewitt or a Hewitt supplier for advice? Possible that the device has malfunctioned.

Gas cap has been ruled out. Also was smoked and no leaks were discovered.

Also, after checking gas cap, clear all codes with code reader if you have one or take to Autozone or similar to have them clear codes. As for the MAF code, have you cleaned it recently, if not, give it a whirl regardless of code problems.

I hadn't considered the hewitt device failing I will try reaching out to them next. Yes I thoroughly cleaned the maf, codes came right back on after clearing.

I’d look at the Hewitt as well. No personal experience with them, but it’s after market and 5 years old.

Good move on the leak test.

I have no experience with the Hewitt or with the SAI on these trucks, but a car I have has an SAI and when a leak happened it gave me 3 different codes. After digging around I fixed the leak and all codes left.

I'm thinking if the Hewitt has failed the ecu is picking up on all the truths that the Hewitt normally lies about, in easy terms.

I think @Darkness is spot on. Are we talking about a gen 1 kit? It has a relay that plugs in a wire that wraps around it or something like that? Are all those connections tight?

i just looked on hewitts website, their modules have a lifetime warranty. They do ask that you contact them and follow their troubleshooting suggestions.

(following cause I just put a gen 2 kit on my truck )

This was the response I received from Hewitt. I will recheck everything that is outlined in their response and go from there:

    Joshua,
The Evap codes are likely coincidental and something you sometimes see from a loose gas cap or a gas cap seal that has gotten old/cracked. The first thing to do is check that it is tight or just replace it with a new one. After that you have a leak somewhere else in the system which points to the Purge Vacuum Switching Valve being stuck open, it is having a wire issue or just a leak in the canister or hose somewhere. Certainly not worth doing what you have talked about, and they just want to sell you the new system and labor to install it.
As for the maf and secondary air codes, the P1442/45 codes are what I would typically expect to see if the system tried to run with the plates installed so the module is not preventing the system from running. Luckily, none of those codes should cause limp mode.
We do see a lot of problems with MAF sensors when the weather starts to get hot but it is possible the module is also causing the MAF problem.
The first thing to do is see if we can isolate the problem.
Get a Can of CRC MAF cleaner from the part store or even Walmart and follow the directions on the can. After you are done disconnect the module harnesses and plug the MAF back into the factory harness. You can leave the starter relay wire and module as is but just secure the module harnesses so they don't get damage by something like your cooling fan or exhaust.
Clear the codes and drive it for 3 days to see if the MAF code comes back on. You will still get the P1442 and P1445 and check engine light because the module is not stopping the system from running so you will need to scan the codes to know. The P0101 is a 2 trip code so if you clear the codes after you do the work the 1st trip/drive cycle will be the next one after it has sat off for 7hrs or longer and the 2nd drive cycle would be the day after that.
If you scan the codes after your third day and the MAF P01010 code is back on it is time to replace the MAF with a factory Hitachi sensor.
If it stays off plug the module back in and reset the codes. Do the three day drive cycle again and check if the P0101 code comes back on.
If it doesn't come back on the MAF just needed cleaning and the module is fine.
But if the code comes back on with the module reconnected we can say it is likely module related and can get you a replacement shipped out at that point.
Just let us know if you have any questions or what you find following those steps.
As an alternative we also now have a Gen2-3V unit that you could upgrade to to isolate the MAF. It operates and installs completely different but does not connect to the MAF, IAT or have a starter relay wire. Check it out on the website.

I’ve never dealt with any of these issues or this company, but I’m very impressed with Hewitt’s response. THAT is what customer service looks like.

Just to update, I followed the diagnostic procedures outlined by Hewitt, and determined that the MAF sensor itself was faulty. I replaced with a hitachi MAF and reconnected the SAIS bypass wiring from Hewitt...and No more MAF code, and no more SAIS codes! $75 for the sensor, a whole lot better than the 3K the shop was saying had to be done. I still have the code for the small evap leak, which is clearly unrelated, is making me question whether the shop I initially took it to actually smoked it or just wanted to get me to spend the $ on the sais system.

@Jcr150 sounds like you got it under control, glad to see a fairly easy resolution. As for that shop, I’d probably be looking for a mechanic elsewhere. Another take away is how impressive hewitts customer service. I’ll be recommending their kits for sure

Agreed with the others on Hewitt's outstanding CS. I would never take a vehicle to that particular shop again since they clearly failed to correctly diagnose a simple problem.
