I have had the TRD Air filter for a while now and its time to clean it. I looked online and the TRD cleaning kit is discontinued. I know K&N makes one but I don't trust anything they make. I have read to many stories of people sucking oil into their intake.

Should I go back to stock paper filter or is there something better. I don't care to get a cold air intake. I live 2 miles up a dusty dirt road so filtration is my main concern.

    Wix makes great paper filters.

The K&N kit is fine. Oil in the intake means too much was used. FYI, the stock system is a cold air intake.

Yup! Exactly why I'm not interested in paying for an aftermarket one. I figured someone would chime in about getting the S&B or something.

Stock. They're cheap and easy to just take out and toss and throw in a new one. Especially if you're doing it often in dusty dirt roads.

Or do one of the reusable filters and while it's being dried, throw in a stock one so you can still drive as needed.

    I went back to stock.

I live down a dirt road so I just change the filter every oil change.

When ordering a DAP tune, the Stage 2 kit includes a AFE MagnumFlow Pro Dry S filter so I guess it makes a difference significant enough to be seen on the dyno. Normally I figure air filters only make a difference in terms of sound, or have varying levels of filtration (K&N seems to consistently be at the bottom of this list).

So with that said I go with AFE.

If that's the case, the supercharger kit comes with a cold air intake so cold air intake must work right?

Any force induction will amplify the effects of performance parts, all performance parts don’t work cause there’s so many computer controlling the engine. So without a tune nothing work

I've always run the OEM in my 4Runner. I change that and the cabin air filter at every oil change. I'll probably just go back to the OEM in my Tundra too. I never noticed a difference with the TRD filter except I can hear it whistle when I'm on the gas.

    Some like...stuff and things.
I have the aFe in mine only because it came with the Super Stock intake kit. If it weren't for that, I'd throw in an off the shelf from the local auto parts store and change it every oil change. I carry a replacement stock filter in my kit that I keep in the truck at all times for a "just in case" scenario.

    Lots of shenanigans.
I have been using the KN oil and seems to be fine. I think that I might’ve put a bit too much oil on the first application but nothing that a towel can’t fix.

This thread is a bit dated, so I just wanted to double check. Are you using this filter in the aftermarket TRD cold air intake air box? I currently have that (purchased with the truck already on) and am tired of screwing with the oiled element filter. Just want a drop-in paper element. Thanks!

Appreciate the response, but when I pull up 1433653 yes it is $15.22. But that is for the stock air box. The oiled filter "TRD" element roughly measures 12" x 11". That is why I'm asking if they are using it in the TRD box. I believe it is slightly bigger than stock. I'm looking to drop in a paper element replacement.

Yes, dry filters filter the best. It's not dependent on how well you clean them, or whether you oil them properly. Just replace when dirty. Idiot proof.
The oiled filters are just one of those low hanging fruit items, like mufflers, batteries, engine oil, etc, that people can easily modify themselves without being an actual mechanic or having a shop. So, they sell tons of aftermarket gimmick junk for the average joe to pretend they're a gearhead in their driveway on the weekends.
Nothing wrong with that. Tinkering keeps a lot of us out of trouble. But entirely unnecessary and the "performance" aspect is all nonsense.
Also, the stock air intake system IS a cold air intake system.
