So… my transmission is gone on my 2001 4.8L 4wd AC and can’t find one anywhere without extremely high mileage (& asking stupid money as well). I saw a post on another Tundra forum (tundrasolutions.com) that said you could put a tranny from an 03-04 in an 00-02 truck. Does anyone have any experience or feedback on this situation?

    Driving it…

I just picked it up on Friday, 342,000km, paid $2,800 so wasn’t totally shocked when it broke down. Took a mechanic buddy of mine to look at it before buying and he spent a couple hours going over it and there was no indication of tranny troubles. Driving down the freeway on Saturday, hear a clunk and lost power to the axle. Had it towed to my local trusted shop and he just broke the bad news.

Could always have it rebuilt too.

I read that they have a updated planetary gear available, which was the weak point of the earlier 00-02 trans, in the 03-04 ones. Once you put that in, should be good to go?

Sooooo to answer my own question... it seems that the answer is YES, It's a direct swap over.

I'll do a write up later when I get around to swapping mine in a few months

Confirmed… it works! Just picked it up from the shop yesterday and it runs like a top. I am so happy!

Here’s what the old pan looked like

Yikes. That's a lot of metal in that pan.

That actually makes me feel better. When I dropped my trans pan I had essentially zero metal shavings on the magnets and only the sludge which is normal.

Just to reconfirm the confirmation, I also confirm that this is a direct swap. I did it to my 02 Sequoia with an 04 Tundra tranny from a junkyard.

Looking for a new transmission today. I saw this thread in the past and had to look it up again to be sure. I thought I read somewhere else that the tail of the trans needed to be swapped out. Did I misread somewhere? Also, what's the difference between the 4wd and 2wd transmissions?

Found my answer. Not finding anything about a different gear ratio between the 4wd and 2wd transmissions. Just the tail cone for sensors.

Does anyone on this thread know if an automatic transmission from a 2003 3.4 V6 Tundra will work in a 2001 3.4 V6?

Should be compatible if it’s the same drive type. 4wd to 4wd etc.

Hell, for that matter you should be able to look at the ID plates on both of them (I assume they'll both have one) and confirm the trans model is the same.

Probably a stupid question here, but the ECU doesn't care that the truck now has an extra gear?? Need to adjust the shift points?

    2001 and 2003 are both 4 speeds

They didn't move up to a 5 speed until 2005. That's why 03-04 can be swapped. I think a lot of work is required to move up the 5 speed. I haven't seen anyone do it.

Oh roger that, I missed that in the title of the thread, "03-04 in an 01". See, stupid question!

Sorry to bump this, but I've read that the 03-04 4Runner is a non-vvt 4.7 and comes with a 5-speed auto (A750E). Does anyone know if this would potentially work in a 2001 Tundra with an A340E?

    The engine or the trans?

    Engine yes.

Trans only if you got the 4runner ECU and made any wiring changes necessary to use it.

I’ve been told that the ECU Module in the 2002 Sequoia will not work with a 2003 or 2004 Transmission?

    can anyone verify this?
