Making the best of my utility trailer

So I bought this 5x10 utility trailer with a 3500 pound axle for $700 about a month and a half ago. It was in pretty good condition, but I can’t leave anything alone... it didn’t have a spare, I wanted more support for the heavier loads, and I want it to be pretty for a trailer. I also need the trailer a bit taller because my truck is taller and I am running a 6” drop hitch and with heavier loads, I dislike the angle of the trailer.

So, it has been just used and abused since I bought it, but I put in an order for sumo trailer springs, new wheels, falken wildpeaks, and red leg nuts!!!

and this week when I was waiting for metal, an idiot backed his trailer into mine and busted the tail light on the passenger side of the trailer... so now I am considering breaking out the grinder and welder and coming out with a “custom” solution.

 

And installed! Lifted the trailer at least an inch, and here are the new tail lights.

I flared the fenders and I have a 3rd wheel and tire to go on the spare, but it wouldn’t fit, I am going to have to cut and weld something different

 

I took the trailer out for it’s first run with the new wheels and tires yesterday. Drove great and I loved the extra width so I could see the tires in the mirrors. Loaded down, it rode well, I was worried about suspension bottom out, but it never hit the fenders.

This morning I had some time between installs, so I installed my sumo springs. I cut the first rib off and bolted it to the board (I know wood isn’t the best for this support, but it will do for now until I add a metal strap). My trailer is loaded down with about 2000-2500 pounds right now, and it lifted the loaded trailer about an inch. I was going to make longer shackles for the leafs, but I think this will work this way. I no longer need to worry about the fenders hitting the tires during suspension bottom out and this will bring the trailer to damn near level when loaded. Assuming it rides well, I should be done with anything to do with height or suspension. With the suspension unloaded, the sumo springs barely touch the axle. I didn’t want the trailer to be a pogo stick.

I have a new weld on swing jack coming because I hate having a straight up and down jack... then I can modify the spare tire mount to accept the bigger wheel and tire. Then some paint and new lights.

 

Extended the spare tire mount, mounted the 3rd wheel and tire for the spare, welded on the new swing out jack, I hated the old one... I would bottom out on it at the metal yard. I also installed the new tail lights since the passenger side stopped working since some backed into my trailer and shattered the plastic.

 

Thank you, boards need to be replaced soon, I will add some better support under the trailer where the sumos go. I am also considering making longer shackles to lift it alittle more. Unloaded it can be a bit bouncy

 

Well, it was fun, but I have heavily outgrown the trailer and it is for sale, I just picked up this beauty today

My utility trailer's leaf springs are directly under the frame, making it super easy for some sumo springs.

 

Correct, I was going to make longer shackles aswell, I think I am going to sell it to be an expedition trailer.
I am thinking about test fitting the big wheels and tires from my little trailer on the big one

 

I would be lying if I haven’t thought of that already…

it is 2 3500 pound axles, I am assuming I can run a bit over 5000 pounds, so about double what my other trailer could do. Plus I can haul my car, or farm equipment on it. I am fairly confident that 5200 pound axles would be on a taller deck equipment hauler rather than a low deck car hauler, my little red car is lowered and I doubt it would make it on an equipment hauler

In all honesty, I need a shop and a fork lift before I need a bigger trailer. I might just start having hot shots pick up and deliver for me
