I bought my new Tundra March 2020 and decided to change the oil in August at 3000 miles. So I then drained the oil and installed the new filter. I proceeded the pour 8.5 quarts oil in, after starting and checking for leaks. I checked oil level and discovered it was high, drove and rechecked still high. I removed some to get the correct level.

Now yesterday I decided to change the oil for the second time after driving 3900 miles. This time I added 8 quarts ran and checked the level, a little low so added approximately 6 ounces. Now reads spot on for full.

My question is have any of you found similar fill discrepancy's in the published oil amounts by Toyota?

7.9qt does it for me. It may have an 8.5qt capacity, but unless you jack up the drivers side of the truck, you don’t typically get that last little bit to drain out.

Always fill a quart less than you think you’re gonna need and check it before continuing.

I experienced that at first too. I now (I'm at 75,000 miles and change every 10,000) putting in about 8.3 quarts and it's perfect.

A little extra won't hurt, as soon as it starts turning more than a quart enters the circulation routes.

My old Tacoma I always put 1/2 QT Less in and it was spot on. On my Tundra it's 8.5 qts.

Every vehicle I have ever owned has required more oil than published to get to the full line after draining the old oil out. I do change my filter every time I change the oil, and I always have the front lifted higher than the back to drain more out than it would if it were level. I also let the vehicle sit for several minutes to allow the oil to thoroughly drain.

This time I did jack up the drivers side a bit and more oil did drain, of course I don't know how much more it was.

It’s just a FYI, I’m sure there’s no harm done here

Could just not be draining every drop when you empty and that last 1/2 quart could just be what's left on your engine.

I'm not concerned about any harm, just find it strange the published amounts don't jive. Most of the vehicle's I've owned were full with the published amount.

Although my wife's 2016 Mazda CX-5 says I believe 4.8 quarts fill, I put in a 5 quart jug and it still reads low. Go figure.

Yes, if memory serves the manual and my actual fill level volume are about .4qt off. I just empty the first 5qt jug of Mobil 1 Synthetic, and then run 2qt’s out of the second one. Then slow down the last quart or so checking periodically until the dipstick level is where I want it. Then fire her up and let it run until up to temp. At that point I usually need just under 1/2qt to hit the full tick mark on the dipstick.

8.5 quarts is always right for mine.

I've noticed the dipstick reading is very dependent on how level the truck is sitting, both side to side and front to rear. A slight angle in any direction throws off the reading a noticeable amount.

I have the same symptom. I add 8.5 qts and it is about 1/2” high on the dip stick. Such is life

8.5 quarts for my 20 Platinum has been spot on for the two oil changes that I have done at home.

8.5 quarts both times I changed it, right about a full line. Good thing, after 5k miles, still right below full line!

Then why do you put in 8.5qt?

The spec is 7.9qt. I round up and dump in 8qt.

According to the 2019 and 2021 owners manuals, the spec is:

    7.9 qt (w/out filter change)
    8.5 qt (w/ filter change)

The 7.9qt spec is for no filter change, that's from my 2020 model year manual.

I don't know about anyone else, but I will never change my oil without also changing the filter.

What @dt325ic said…8.5 with filter change.

I’ve never been able to “square the circle” between the manual saying 8.5qts and a cheap dipstick being accurate. I do my own changes and once measured each quart in a measuring cup to make sure the oil bottles were not the problem.

I NEVER fill above the full line. If I accidentally do, I drain some until it gets down to it. It's more harmful to have 1/2 qt too much than it is to run 1 qt too low.

Me neither. Overfilling is not good. I always change the filter, and it comes out to just under 8qt when I'm done.

I think I usually put in 8 quarts and then see where it's at.

And yeah, I never change the oil without changing the filter. Not sure why that would ever be done. One of my tractors says for the first 50 hour service to replace filters but don't bother changing the oil yet, but I don't know why you'd ever change the oil but not the filter.
