If I had decent internet, I’d do it a lot more. But when I’m having to constantly open/push/transfer 300-700MB files over 5down/0.5up internet, that ain’t happening.

Forgot that I have a defensive driving class that I have to renew at work today.:bored: That should hopefully eat up the majority of my afternoon.

Every two years. Mandatory for all employees, whether you drive company vehicles or not. Driving is the most dangerous thing this company does, and EVERY employee drives to work at the very least.

The 4 hour class was done in a bit over one hour. Double edge sword. Nice to be out of a meeting, but then I had to come back to work.

76 miles in 2.5 hours. Don’t think my leaving work early to avoid traffic strategy worked.

Although it will be even worse tonight.

I’m set up amongst the trees now. Unfortunately I’m 80’ from a road. Not the best location for relaxing, but we knew that coming here.

Hey zeus. If driving to work is the most dangerous thing, I made a bad career choice. We do confined space and electrical tag ou training quarterly. One of the hardest things to teach is if you're a tank watch and your coworker goes down, don't go get him. In 40 years I personally know 5 dead guys from confined space violations and two from electrical violations
None were conforming to their training.
Sorry for putting a downer in here.

And years ago I met a guy that was taking offensive driving training. I don't remember where ,but I would sign up in a heartbeat.

We just have good safety else where, but statistically more people die driving than many activities that are perceived as super dangerous. We all drive, and it seems mundane. We get complacent and forget that we are piloting a 2-6 thousand pound missile.

Quite true. But I struggle with the concept that if someone has a wreck driving to work that it's the employers fault. Why should a company spend overhead to tell someone to drive safe?

Because they get a discount on workman's comp insurance and their auto insurance.. Everyone in the company may, at some point, drive while on the clock. Travel for training, taking a company car to another location for various reasons, etc.

Our safety guys are certified to teach it too, so it's not really paying overhead for us.

LOTO/confined space and fall restraint are top priority nowadays.

My mind was pretty scrambled last night. I should clarify, the company I work for likes to push that they really care about the employees, it's B.S., but they like that image. By saying they are giving this training to keep everyone safe they get to say they want you to be safe off work as well as at work. Gives them warm fuzzy feelings inside, and it makes newcomers feel like they are cared about. A few years in and the reality becomes apparent, but they at least made a good first impression.

That's good! Some do, some don't, but it only takes getting burned once or twice before you won't trust any of them. ;)

Very true. In 23 years, I’ve never seen them burn anyone. But I’ve seen them take very good care of anyone that needed help. Our owner matches 1:1 on any “pass-the-hat” for helping family members that have been in an accident or stricken by tragedy. We’ve built ADA accessible additions to houses for employees that had accidents away from work (one junior PM lost his legs falling trees on a weekend - the entire medical bill was covered by our owner).
Lots of family here and lots of longevity - both of which are rare in construction. Our average tenure for foremen is over 10 years, and for project managers it’s 15 years. My FIL worked here 35 years and is among a large group that has. Our Senior VP just retired last year after 55 years with the company.

My employer rolled out a new program about 5-6 ago after a death occurred. It seemed legit and I was all-in. A coworker just laughed at me and said it was just another poster program. He was right unfortunately. When you see mgmt and teams whose priority is safety violating the rules in plain sight, you know it is a joke.

That is unfortunate, but not uncommon. They talk big on safety, but expect you to kill yourself for the job. I tend to think of an employer the same way they would treat me. If I die today, I'll be replaced in less than a week. Same goes for them.
