Has anyone painted their own body parts with color code spray paint, to save money?

So, I figured I would save more money if I buy a used white fender for my black toyota.

Has anyone painted their own body parts using dupli-color spray paint, or some other rattle can kit that matches you color code?

Did you have to spray some clear coats over the base?

I'm on a budget, and not into making the Tundra into a money pit.

 

It can be done. Will it look like a House of Kolor 16,000 dollar paint job? Nope. Can you get decent results with a rattle can? Yes, but it takes lots of prep work and patience.
There are a good number of YT videos that show guys painting with spray cans and the results are surprisingly good.
I would start researching and watching some video content and see what it'll take.

the clear is where it all comes together. Buffing can make it look almost pro-fessional...

How many coats of clear coat did you put on your hand !

 

Might be better to invest in an inexpensive spray gun (if you have a compressor with a separator filter) as opposed to rattle cans. Rattle cans nozzles are notoriously shitty.

 

I painted the chrome door handles with duplicolor perfect match. Came out look pretty good on one side since I took my time. The other side I rushed it a bit so there are some imperfections. I used primer, color, and clear coat. At least 2 coats of each. For color, I probably did 4 or 5. I still have some paint that got chipped off. Oh well. Doesn't bother me much since color matched door handles were pricey and I probably spent $20 on the rattle cans. Like the poster said above, you will need patience and don't rush it.

 

But did you buff it out? Bet your nails looked fantastic!

 

Look for a body shop paint supply store and see if they will mix paint for your color code and put it in a spray can.

Thats what I did to color match the bumper trim on my truck. Sanded (600 grit), 2 coats dupli color primer I already had (sanded 600 after each coat dried overnight), color matched rattle can 2 coats and then clear coated.

 

@N84434 Thanks! I just went outside a little while ago and realized that i could bend the fender back to almost be flush with the fender flare. NoW I need to get my porta-power I have never used and try to push/bend the piece of metal forward that the fender bracket bolts to, and bend the front edge of fender that is below where the parking lamp goes.

But there are some paint chips, or paint flaking off...ughh!!!

Someone told me to use the really thick peice of metal from part of the suspension to brace porta-power against. I don't want to ruin/break something on the suspension.

Here are some pics of what it looks like after I bent the fender out to almost line up with the flare.

 

I do have a small compressor. Don't know if that'll work. Thanks for the info. I was thinking about leaving the new replacement plastic bumper cover and bumper ends primed, since it's a black, but would be nice if I could paint them so everything kinda matches.
