Could a tow truck tow a 2006 Tundra SR5 Double Cba safely, if in 2WD?

I might have to have my Tundra towed tomorrow, because it is not legal to drive (Though I am tempted to risk it, because it's only a couple miles from where I live).

I was wondering if a tow truck could tow my Tundra, without messing it up, if I put it in 2WD and Neutral?

When in 2WD are the front, or rear tires providing the power to move the truck?

I am seeing online that I should ask the tow company to send a flatbed tow truck.

@Hbjeff, No plates, no registration, no insurance. Bought from an insurance auction, and have to pick it up by tomorrow, or they'll charge storage fees. I might be able to register it, and get plates tomorrow, but only if the treasurers office got the paperwork from the auction seller.

Technically it’s safe to tow with the front wheels free wheeling. When 4x4 is not on the two front axles are disconnected from each other. When in 2wd the front are already free wheeling just like they would be on a tow truck.

I slapped some plates on mine back in January when I bought it used and illegally drove it home.

Was about a 45 minute ride, too.

First thing to do is call your insurance company and add the new vehicle to your policy. They can do that over the phone in about 5 mins. They’ll email the insurance card right to your phone. Then take the plates from your current vehicle and use them on the new one. (Just to get it home) And this should go without saying, but drive like you’re taking your road test and the instructor is in the passenger seat.
Laws and policies differ from state to state, but if I were inclined to do it 100% legal (which I’m generally not); in Maine you can get a 48 hour Transport Plate for $20. Sounds like you don’t really have time to pursue that option though.

I had the tow truck lift the front of my truck, disconnected rear drive haft off the axle and used a ratchet strap to belly wrap the drive shaft to the underside of my box.
    Good to go
(I lost lower ball joint up in the bush, pulled the front axel shaft out when it hit the ground, yadda yadda yadda. Needed a 4x4 tow truck to move it. Flat bed wouldn't have worked)

Another option I've seen. Put truck in 2wd and in neutral with the truck running and front end tow it the few miles home (cheap Uhaul car dolly) That way the transmission pump is circulating fluid to keep you from damaging the trans.

Not legal advice and not state specific but you can generally insure something over the phone with your insurance company, all they need is the VIN and some other info. Most states have temporary accommodations. The auction house should have a dealers license and give you temporary plate tags and you'll pay taxes thru them, generally. And generally something like a 30 day window to register and tag it, etc.

Most states understand the purchase challenges so give leeway as long as you do some due-diligence in insuring it and getting temp tags etc. They don't expect every new buyer to tow their cars home from the purchase location. You should be fine for a short drive.

That’s how they catch the folks smuggling drugs….
I’d say tow it. Not worth the ticket, unless your local dmv can give you a temp tag.

That's what the tow truck driver said. He could have lifted the rear tires, and kept the front tires on the ground. I ended up paying for the flatbed ($140) cause he was there.

I only would have to drive a couple miles, but the truck has some left front damage from collision with a deer, or vehicle. So I would have to duct tape the fender liner so it wouldn't rub the tire, etc.

I went to the treasurer's office earlier that day to see if the title had come in from the insurance auction place, so I could register it that day and get plates. But it didn't. They don't sell the 40 day temporary registration permits, without the title. I used to be able to get a temporary just with a copy of the title from insurance auction, but they don't do it that way anymore.

Any photos of the truck and what you paid?

Or link to the auction page. Interested in buying a salvage access cab but no clue on what they are going for

TOYOTA TUNDRA 3.jpg TOYOTA TUNDRA 1.jpg @jerryallday I paid $4,611.58. It has a clean title. I noticed after I got it that it has newer Toyo tires, and Raceline rims.

An employee at the auction place said it has a drop bracket IFS lift kit. He said he would pay me double what I paid for it, but then realized he couldn't buy vehicles that are sold by his employer.

It needs some work, and has over 200,000 miles.

I'm going to replace the bumper, maybe both headlights, the left hand parking lamp, the left fender, left fender line, the left side mirror, left fog light. so far.

I am tempted to keep it, but I try to buy vehicles to flip, so I can get out of debt.

Super dope and solid deal. Hopefully this lands you a nice penny. Should sell over 10k once you are done. At least in Cali

@jerryallday That's what the guy at the auction place said I could get. It does have rust and dings. Good thing is I found out it has a MTX subwoofer built into the storage compartment underneath rear seat, and MTX amp under the drivers seat, and a JVC stereo. Sometimes people don't remove things after an accident, and I find some nice upgrades.

@empty_lord You are right about that. There is a place I take my beater 2003 Subaru forester in the national forest, to go dig for smoky quartz crystals, that I wouldn't take this truck, unless I had some special armor wrap (or some detachable chain saws). The paint would have scratches right away.

I underestimated what you meant when you said the truck had some damage. Yeah, it's best you didn't drive that home on a bogus plate -- it just screams, "Pull me over!"

Nice truck though. It'll be sweet once you get some of the parts swapped.

@tvpierce Those pics are after I removed the bumper, but part of the bumper was missing, and the left fender liner was hanging, broken left head lamp asembly, etc.

And the auction place is a couple miles from me mostly on one highway. Of course I have seen the highway patrol, and a wrecked up truck might have been a reason for them to want to pull me over. And I would have been turning onto highway, from where there are a few auto salvage yards.

Glad I had it towed on a flatbed instead ($55 more to tow on flatbed).
