    Hey guys,

Second time I've posted about this – first time got zero response. At around 1400 rpms I get a weird clanking noise from the engine. If I accelerate it goes away, if I let off the gas, it goes away. It is very strange. I have a 2019 TRD Pro w/ 65k miles. It's done it since I bought it w/ 50k.

I think it's getting worse, which is why I'm reaching out. Also shops are like a month out, so figured ya'll could help me decide if it's safe to keep driving or not.

    Listen to it here:

    Thanks in advance!

Dylan, its always pretty difficult to diagnose an engine noise with a driving vid. Can you duplicate the noise at the same RPM stopped with the hood open?

What grade fuel do you use?

I cannot. That's one of the reasons I didn't think much of it when I first heard it – I can't get it to do while stopped in neutral. It seems like there needs to be some slight resistance... which is why I hear it really bad when in 4L and crawling, especially up a slight grade.

It does it in 2H, 4H and 4L. Doesn't matter the speed, just needs a slight incline and my foot needs to be almost off the gas. Does not do it standing still.

Yes, any road surface. Only common denominator is there has to be a slight grade, does not do it downhill, only slightly uphill.. and sometimes flat, but I can't get it as good as in the video if it's flat or steep for that matter.

Very strange, try this. In gear with your foot on the brake, give it some gas up to that Rpm that you seem to notice it at. Maybe the engine needs a load to produce the sound you're hearing. Good luck.

Any chance your fan or belts is making contact with anything? If your motor mounts are compromised or loose it might allow your engine to shift slightly under load at peak torque/ max resistance threshold. Just a guess, but I’d start there.

Shouldn't your truck still be under warrantee>? Not all dealers are scumbags (just most), and some of them actually have good techs (check out Ford Boss Me on youtube, good content), have you taken it in for a diag?

I'm scheduled, but they're like 30 days out. So not til July. They had it 7k miles ago for the fuel pump -- diagnostics picked up nothing.

Well that certainly helps to try to diagnose your problem. Maybe you have a pre-detonating problem, does it sound like pinging to you?

Well, make sure you give them a solid list on the ways they can replicate it if you haven't found an answer by then. Looks like Tilly is starting to narrow down for you.

No, it sounds like an idling diesel engine.

Well at least we got it to make the noise while sitting still which will make it much easier for the dealership to diagnose. If its been doing it for 15k miles and hasn't failed, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it till your appointment . I personally think its a VVT problem, but that's just my guess. Let us know how you make out with the dealership.

This is why I asked what octane fuel. 85 octane is for carb motors. Put some octane boost in the tank.

Which is mid grade where you are correct?

Maybe a bad timing chain tensioner?

    Correct.

85, 87 and 92 are what most stations have.

The station I go to most often (Fred Meyer) has 87, 89 and 92

Update: I've been to an independent shop and a Toyota dealership. Both are not 100% sure what it is. The dealership thinking it's a hydrologic problem on the timing chain, the independent guy, a valve issue. Both said it'll most likely become an exploratory thing. Great, just what I need someone digging around a 21st century V8. Prob looking at $4-5$k. Ef that!

What I'm going to do: BC I didn't agree to a work order, the dealership discarded any paper trail. I followed my visit to Toyota by visiting two different dealerships in town to see what they'd offer me. Ford offered me $49.5k. Good for 30 days. I'm going to take it.

Maybe I'll wait for the 2022 Tundra, maybe I'll buy a Rapter. Who knows. Right now, I'm pretty pissed this tried and true engine has failed me. I've had 4 Toyotas before this, so I expect higher quality from them. Pretty lame.

Good for you… are you out of warranty?

Edit: saw it’s 30 day wait to get it in shop… sell it!

Assuming your ford dealer doesn't find the problem, will still be a pain for the next buyer. 85 octane is too low for these trucks, surprised you weren't getting knock.
