How's the fishing John?

 

Typical summer surf fishing. Croaker, mostly throw backs. A few 16 inch reds. Today it's too churned up. 4 ozs of lead wouldn't hold. But the weather is warm and the beer is cold.

Nice so far weather looks good first week the 2nd week who knows. Last year hurricane took away 2 days of my 7 day vacation. Will be in Avon if anyone wants to get together on the beach let me know.

Always wanted to go there. Bucket list for me. Are the beaches dirty from all the trucks & wild horses or the preservation groups & rangers runs a tight ship over there?

 

He was on a boogie board. It wouldn't float with him standing on it. It would pull my 2 yo grandson off his feet though.

 

Whats the setup for that front rack? Is that mounted in a single tube hitch or double? I like it.

Moving the family to Wilmington so I'll be spending more time on the sand. Prepping for some surf fishing/beach visits, that'll be my next series of mods.

 

Thank you everyone for the great tips and suggestions for driving in the OBX. We had a wonderful time and the truck did not hesitate for a second in the soft sand or anywhere on the beach. The sheriff does drive up and down to check for passes if parked and seems to keep the peace and fun atmosphere for all adults and families to be safe.

With worn out tires (Khumo road Venture) we had no issue what so ever getting to Corolla Beach. Here are some pics.

Go down at the end of August/September. If you are ok with rolling the hurricane dice there are less visitors, the businesses are still open, the water is warm, and many locals and NRPO’s are down enjoying the lull.
In Carova permits are required only to park on the beach. Sheriffs patrol and if you forget to hang your tag they stop to ask. Permits can be purchased at the visitors center (conveniently next to the Corolla ABC store) Load up the days goods in the bed and no lugging the stuff to the beach like John Candy.
I always take a tow strap and shovel in case I need it or feel like being a Good Samaritan.
Remember don’t feed the horses and although it’s a great vacation spot, remember some people call it home. ‍♂️

 

Excellent point. One almost died recently from choking, he lived but had to be removed from the herd and sent to the wild horse retirement farm. One died last year from choking, on an apple if I remember right.

I'm taking my Tundra out on the beach for the first time here in Carolina Beach (Freeman Park). Beach erosion has pretty much cut the length of beach down more than half, so it becomes too crowded by later in the morning. That's why we started going later in the afternoon as people start to pack up and head home for dinner. A little less stressful.

I had a 2014 Tacoma that we took out there often, but its my first time in the Tundra, so I was scrolling the board to see if there's any other hints/tips with the much larger truck. Airing down is a must. The only time I got badly stuck was the one time I completely forgot to air down. But with tires aired down to about 20psi and being cautious, I can't remember ever getting stuck. The few times I've had trouble is when I'm forced to stop due to something in front of me stopped and the sand is very soft.

I've been in NC for 17 years now and I have yet to go to OBX. It's about a 4-5 hour trek from Wilmington, so I just prefer to stick around here in SENC. But I definitely want to go soon.

 

I you air down and engage 4HI it shouldn't be much different than your Taco. I had the same thoughts when I moved from an Isuzu Trooper to my Tundra. The Tundra is a little better with respect to ground clearance and larger footprint. Although the Trooper never let me down except once when the vacuum valve on the transfer case failed. But a tug onto harder sand and I made it off the beach in 2WD.

 

We ended up having a great late afternoon/evening out on Freeman Park. Certainly didn't feel much different than my Tacoma. Just glided through the sand effortlessly. Alot of people getting stuck though. One guy had a brand new Tahoe that was buried to the siderails. Took him about 30 minutes and the help of a GMC Sierra to get out.

Been a while, but the pictures were on my work computer.

 

I wonder what makes the difference. The last time we were out there I even put my truck in 2WD several times to see if I had any issues and I didn't. Do you think it's people that don't air down or just don't watch where they go?

 

A lot of it is pressure in the tires but some times if it’s sugar sand it’s hard in general to not get stuck especially if you are a novice in the sand.

I worked 4 days a week driving on sand. Trucks that were huge and the best advice I can give is if you start to wheel spin stop. Either back out of it or air down or both. Pic to show what can be done
