I'd give it a go. No harm using it even in cold weather. When the 5.7 first came out the recomended oil was 5w30 in the winter so 0w30 or 5w30 would do just fine.

Mind you I might be going crazy, BUT wasn’t the 07 5.7 the first 5w-20 engine Toyota shipped out? I know the 4.7 was 5w-30. I don’t see many old trucks any more here at work

You might be right on that. Was it the Tacoma 1GR-FE that used the 5w30?

Yea that used 5w-30 till the end of its life in 15. 4runner was 5w-30 till 09.

either way, running 5w-30 won’t hurt anything. The only engines that really complain are the 1/2AR motors due to the VVTI lock pin issue (which my buddy appears to have figured out a fix with a spring)

At our dealership there was only two bulk oils use, 5w20 and 0w20. Tacoma 4.0 got 5w20. Anything special required a visit to the parts department. Even the old 4.7l got the 5w20.

I find the RAV4 VVTI rattle after an oil change rather entertaining. :D

We’re the same way. We stock 5w-30 for other vehicles in bottles. But bulk is 5w-20 0w-20 and 0w-16

the AR rattle is bad. Figured out the reason though, the lock pin design is pretty different from the others. There’s like 0 preload on the pin, so no oil pressure, no full lock. He found a sprig that just barely puts preload on it and the rattles gone. This weekend it’s first race is happening, we’ll see how it works out. LOL

    Why not 0W30?

5W30 is just easier to come by, cheaper, and when your using it for the summer who cares if it has a cold rating of 0W.

Ok true, I'm thinking of going with 0w30 year round.

If I didn't live in a very cold climate I would just run the 5w30 year round. At my location we see -40F in the winter so I use 0W20. If it never gets below -10F I would stick with the 5w30.
