What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Started the truck up, and played around with my new schmancy check valve for my brake booster vacuum line.

Vacuum generated by engine means I had it backwards in this photo.


Check valve should hold vacuum on booster when the truck is off. Lesson learned.

Drive gingerly up the road to the chapel to make this post in crocs, underwear and a T-shirt. Brakes still feeling excellent.

Played around with the vacuum line whuke truck was idling. Listened to booster. Hisssssssssss. Removed vacuum line, and no more hiss. Normal? Booster due for replacement?

Still can't find that damned squeak, but I have a new plan.

I'll spray pb blaster, Kroil, WD-40 or other liquids on each fastener that I touched when I redid the front end one by one until I find that damned thing.

 

The automovive equivelent of turn it off, then turn it back on:

take it apart, then put it back together. But add grease.

 

I don't have that kinda time anymore.

When I find whatever it is, I'll make time though. I'll strip that whole front end if I have to.

 

Felt like wrenching and ended up cleaning MAF and throttle body(CRC MAF cleaner and CRC TB cleaner) and plug change out....all was done 10K miles and 18 mo ago. All plugs looked good(.033/.034) compared to new(.031), plugs were still holding german tight. Placed an order with McGeorge for IG coils given orig/previous owner did not show records of change. While they still look in good shape(no cracks or arc marks), after 193K miles, I decided it's time....wanta see Denso decal if nothing else

By the way I forgot to mention, when I flat towed the beetle home I stayed with OD off at 60mph for 110 miles. Trans temp stayed at 149F and my indicated mpg for the trip was 14.5. Outside temp was around 80f. I couldn't even feel the weight on the freeway.

 

I Also played around with towing with OD off and on this weekend. On the way out I was trying to get through some hills and traffic and I got up to 220 in the torque converter. I had OD off. I was definitely pushing things and hanging with traffic. It was 92 degrees outside according to the truck. I only got to that temperature once. Most of the time it would get up to 210 by the time I got to the top of the hill. The pan almost got up to 200 once but it stayed in the 190's for the most part.

On the way back OD was off on some of the downhills and flats. I did see a mpg better or so when I did that. There is no power to climb though. It was raining and temps were 40 degrees coolers or so overall. I was also not in a hurry.

 

How does that behave at highway speeds? Does it flap around at all?

 

Haven't tried it yet at highway speeds. I'm sure it will flap a bit but it does have a few horizontal reinforcement bars under the cover to maintain some rigidity along with velcro on the outer vertical edges.

3 pieces need to go to powder coat... the de plasticifcation of my engine bay will commence soon.... looking for a nice aluminum coolant res and p/s res too. but thats later down the line

 

Got some snow on the big mtn last night so I took the Tundra up top and backpacked in to see if a fav lake had iced-off enough to soak some flies. Thought I'd share some frosty pics for those of you in hotter climates. A very purty lake nestled in a cirque at about 10.5K elev. The Tundra performs well on the high tundra, literally. Very close to home, blessed to live up here. Cheers!

How far is that from your house? How many months of the year can you get up there?

 

The road is about 5 minutes away. Takes me roughly 45 min to wheel about 12 miles to the top.

It won't flap around at highway+ speeds if you secure the side velcro strips.

 

I feel like we all glossed over these metal Timing belt covers. What model are they off of?

Wonder why the switch to metal covers. Manifolds went form metal to plastic. Timing bet cover went from plastic to metal.

 

Can they be polished? Are we voting?

I've taken my truck on 10 adventures this year. One ski trip to CO, eight camping trips in the Ozarks and one in IA. The truck has been a fantastic upgrade over the old 4runner. Legendary.

Double cabs are the best adventure vehicles.

 

Added some DIY splash guards made from the non slip rubber mat stuff from carpet section @HD. Not sure if I like it or not.

 

Looks good to me. I mean maybe I wouldn't have cut them out with rusty garden shears, but they work. sorry, I got jokes this morning.

 

Hey! That shits tough to cut with scissors. If you're referring to the white that's the wax pencil. Lol.

 

Maybe because the plastic timing covers can crack. At least mine did.
