Is the turbo timer something that would only be found on the higher horsepower engines? I know my wife's lexus nx 200t doesn't have a turbo timer on it, but it's also not a car that gets driven very hard.

Doesn't the current Tundra already suffer from a severe lack of storage space? It'll be far worse if they start shoving batteries everywhere! My vote would be for a conventional hybrid but even with that I hope they don't take away even more storage.

Turbo timers are so late 80's, early 90's (you diesel guys disregard this).
Turbo timers were necessary on gas vehicles that utilized greased cartridge turbos or oil-cooled turbos.
Modern cars utilize post-engine-shutdown cooling strategies. My 2016 GTI could continue running the electric water pump to keep the turbo bearings from coking up. The water pump could run for an extra minute after shutting off the car, if needed.

Seriously, I am shocked that in 2021 we are talking about 1980's issues, as if Toyota somehow didn't get the memo.

I think they’ll have lots of storage in the regular non hybrid , probably a lot like what Ram does . Maybe they think if you want the hybrid you’ll be willing to give up some extra storage ?

That is another thing we talked about because if it is in the high 60’s low 70’s people like myself and I would think a good amount of the folks on this forum will not be able to afford the truck.

I will kvetch and bitch about it, but I can afford it. Since I keep Toyota products for 15 years or more at my rate, I can even justify the cost based on expected service life. I bought my truck in 2007, I don’t even remember how much I paid for it. The utility remains long after the cost has been forgotten.

That will not keep me from bitching up a storm about it at first though.

I bought my current truck 13 years ago. It is currently 16 years old, and only 84K miles. The high price of a 2022 Tundra might make me postpone. I could easily put $3K into my current truck and expect another trouble-free decade from it.

However, like you, I could spread out the high cost over the expected ownership term of 12+ years and it would end up being very reasonable.

Since the LS500 was introduced, they've sold less than 19K vehicles. It's a very poor sample size. However, there have been issues, and the consensus is that the older V8's were definitely more likely to uphold the typical Toyota/Lexus reliability reputation.

What's more curious to me than the LS is the LX. The LX which is gaining the 600 and 750H monikers, but it is also keeping the 570 moniker. So the 5.7 is not being discontinued entirely. I would imagine Toyota keeps it available even in the new generation Tundra. As I ponder the division in those that want mall crawlers vs those that want service vehicles, Toyota is well aware and thinks about this even more.

The truth of the matter is that the future isn't EVs, or hybrids,...it's everything. ICEs will still be around in abundance 50 years from now. The future is more HP and Torque, that is what people want. That has been the trend for a long time. With the LC gone from the US market, I also would not be surprised to see the 5.7 continue to survive in the next gen Sequoia......and wait for it, wait for it.........next gen 4runner.

That's right, I think Toyota will be adding all the hybrids and some EVs to tease out those buyers and segments, that's why the Taco went to Mexico. It makes more sense to expand in the full size SUV and Truck market in the US, this is where the sales are. But I don't think they'll cut off their nose just to spite their face, and piss off a lot of loyalists that like the products the way they are, just to accommodate their mall crawler segment. I think they are looking to expand production in SUV and full size market, not shift it.

Same here. All this fretting over turbochargers is silly. Turbos aren't wear items, they'll outlast the engine itself unless Toyota screwed up the engineering, which they won't.

I've had multiple turbocharged vehicles and never had a moment's problem. My one vehicle now with a turbo has 400,000 miles on it with no shutdown timer, etc. It's just been drove hard & put up wet. Yes it's a diesel, no it doesn't matter as far as the turbo is concerned.

This engine being turbocharged doesn't concern me for a minute. It's a plus because it boosts low end torque which makes for better drivability.

That is a small sample size, but I can tell you from first hand experience, there have been very few issues with the LS500. I can also tell you the performance upgrade over the 4.6 in the old LS is HUGE!

Honestly, I've never heard of one as others are describing. The engine still running and all that. My WRX would keep everything circulating until the turbo cooled down. I would expect any modern turbo car to work the same way.

I feel you there, I'd love to see this fully locked LC come to North America but I'd also hate to see it replace the Sequoia. The LC's appearance can be deceiving, it sits tall and has a really stretched out snout. The interior dimension however, is closer to a 4runner, a little smaller in fact. The 3rd row is flip down with no true foot well for the passenger, like a 4runner. The new LC is built this way also. The LC is not a solution for a 6 member family, the Sequoia is.

    LOL.

Fortunately or unfortunately depending on your viewpoint, David has been quite accurate with his predictions and renderings thus far.

He has zero credibility after saying he meant to include more interior shots in his hack video, but "forgot" to. He had no interior shots and used far off shots of current trucks to try and make it seem like he had more info.

The 5.7 in a 4 runner would be freaking awesome.

The 5.7 in the 22 tundra would be great as well.

The 5.7 with a 10 speed transmission would be nice as well.

The 5.7 with twin turbos or a factory supercharger again, in the trd series of tundras would be even better.

No doubt, but what is the right amount of grille if you need to keep two radiators fed with outside air?

Need engine coolant, intercooler coolant, transmission cooler, oil cooler, a/c condenser, and the electric motor may have its own cooling system that needs cooled off. Lots of air flow is a good thing. Think slow speeds, heavy loads, at +100*.

But, if I had to guess, I bet the higher models will have chrome and painted bumper. But, it would also look nice to have a blacked out version (grill, door handles/rims/tail pipe) with the painted bumpers.

I'll take the added performance and make the vroom vroom sound in my head. I like the sound of my TRD exhaust, but I really don't even notice it anymore unless I'm getting on it. I would rather have the rumored 642 lbs of torque than the 15 seconds of vroom vroom.
