Oil Filter & Brake Pads

Going in road trip soon. Want to replace oil filter and brake pads, which brand do you recommend?

 

Oil filter should be OEM. You can find at wally world for about $7.

Pads will have to be recommended by others. I think @Lil Steve has recently done some brake work.

 

2nd on the Toyota filter.

I've always had good luck with ceramic brakes. Centric, Wagner, Powerstop, or Raybestos are all decent choices.

 

I like my powerstop z23’s and fancy cryo rotors. no dust after 2k miles.

 

My front rotors were slightly warped so I went for the Power Stop Z36 package and replaced my OE 13WE calipers with their 13WL's. I wasn't initially impressed because the braking surface area of the WL pads isn't any larger than the WE's but after several months of driving with some towing I have no ragrets. Dont forget to properly adjust your rear brake shoes as well.

Also, if lifted... you may need to adjust your LSPV arm.

Yes, good point as I had to do that after installing heavy duty leaf springs.

Lspv sends extra fluid to rear brake cylinders when you're carrying heavy loads.

When you lift the truck the rear axle (where the LSPV arm mounts) is farther from the valve which means even less fluid is going to the rear cylinders than before. I think? Perhaps someone else can "fact check" me.

In order to celebrate my first purchase of mobil 1 oil, i bought a mobil 1 filter. So far its as good as fram…i mean, oil your seals, and clean machined surfaces. Get a good idea of where your oil leaks are, degrease and clean everything, then you can trace leaks easier. Definately worth it while the skidplate is off.


on my titan, dad cut a window for oil changes in the skidplate, meant to add a door, never did. On the tundra, it looks like a window in the side of the skid plate might work. I dont like these little filters. Anyone know of a bigger replacement?

I have used the Mobil1 gargantu-filter for several years now. Holds an extra half quart of oil. Better cooling. No complaints. I usually use Pennzoil Full Synthetic Platinum or something. Used Mobil-1 last time cause they had a sale. 5qts for $14. Bought them out.

Yes, I have been using Mobil-1 and Bosch filters on our 3 vehicles for several years now. They are usually available at the local automotive stores so they are easy to find and acquire if you don't want to wait for the shipping. I haven't personally used these pads as the ones on the truck have plenty of life in them still but will upgrade to these when the time comes.

 

Couldn't agree more. I'd run conventional oil before I ran a blend again.

 

50/50 antifreeze is also a scam.

Wrong oil weight for the first gen trucks, but I'm sure similar deals can be had on 5w30.

 

Costco has a killer deal on its brand of automotive oils if you are a member. Picked up an extra 2-pack during my last visit.

Boom. Good find. Not a bad price, but still cheaper at Walmart buying the 5qt. jugs.

 

False. Beats mixing Distilled Water and the Pure Shtuff any day. Price wise its a little more, but worth it.

 

Since moving to the desert i keep a jug of room temp distilled water handy at all times.
