Beginning to regret getting this truck

Don't get me wrong, I love this truck but there's just been a string of bad things that have happened to it in the first 6 months of its life. Things that I never had a problem in 2 years of ownership of my 2016 that I traded for it. Let's do a quick recap.

Wife inflicted shopping cart dent, 100 bucks later with a decent PDR person and it's all in good.

Last week, ran over a broken up 18 wheeler tire and had the edge end and steel belted radial absolutely gash the rock chip guard on the bottom of both driver side doors. Still kicking myself for that one and weighing my options.

Now, just today, going down the road and a passing garbage truck kicks up a rock and smokes my windshield.

Is this truck cursed or what.

I mean all of that sucks. It's not the trucks fault though.

Just brutal to have a nice truck and watch it get beat up over and over. Hopefully not cursed, just getting out the small stuff so you won't have anymore later on.. :fingerscrossed:

I think that with my Tacoma being black, I see all of the imperfections, scratches, scuffs. Not all that super noticeable, but I know they're there.

I have never had problems like this with old beat up vehicles - but it always happens to my new vehicles. Trouble (the curse) always finds the nicest vehicles to hit. Sorry to hear it has happened to you! At least you don't feel as bad taking it off road.

Sorry these things are happening, they suck but not the truck's fault. You can park it and stay home or enjoy it and risk these crummy but in the scheme of things minor annoyances.

    Good luck.

Bummer. My Tundra is actually the first rig I’ve owned that I haven’t had to replace the windshield during the first year of ownership.

    Hope your luck changes soon!

Me too, it's just upsetting, I don't think I will purchase another new truck again because the stress it induces. It just so happened that when I bought this one in December it was cheaper than the used market because the rebates are still in place. My wife thinks I'm obsessive but this truck is my baby and it's hard to see it get thrashed.

If it makes you feel any better, I put a nice gouge in the top part of my door while installing my awning because I was too impatient to wait for my wife to help. Shit happens.

We had a brand new car for less than 24 hours before it was totaled last month. We were the innocent bystanders in a road rage incident and they hit and ran us at a light. I'll take a chipped windshield, ding or flat tire any day over that bullshit.

People are crazy right now and it's getting worse.

Not to be a Richard, but maybe you can start to leave a little more room ahead of you and try harder to predict the future to avoid some things. For instance, if I see a landscape truck or concrete mixer ahead I will back off a bit, if loose sand and small stones are on the highway shoulders after an ice storm I might drive the city streets for a few days. There are things you can do to help minimize the risks, sometimes you learn as you go. I'd be using all of what has happened in your case to convince my wife that if the truck was higher and had armor then maybe the shopping cart, tire, and stone would not have been a problem.

It truly is a modern marvel the truck can even back out of my driveway everyday. Can you believe those bastards at Toyota still haven’t given me my free trans cooler and figured out a way to increase my payload?

Nope, have had a Tundra previously and really the gas mileage isn't all that bad if you keep your foot out of it.

Yes, I can take the blame on the second item, was looking down changing the station after having changed lanes to reach my exit and ran over the tire without realizing what it was before I saw that gator baby flapping in the wind behind me. The broken window there was nothing I could do, the rock was either dislodged or flung my direction from a trash truck that was coming towards me on a two lane highway.

So at this point, really all that is left is should I go OEM and use my 500 dollar insurance deductible to have a 1232.53 dollar windshield installed or go OEE Pilkington Glass installed for slightly less than my deductible at 482.89. Already spoke to my agent and the choice is mine, he mentions my rates will not be effected by this since its covered by comprehensive.

We have been reliably and duly lectured that if this were a quality truck you wouldn’t get rock chips anywhere .

Well, I guess we could say if the paint weren't paper thin maybe it would be more durable but there seems to already be a thread complaining about that...

As with anything, there is good and bad. Trust me, I feel your pain, truck has flaws. That said, they all do. Personally, I got a decent deal, and I am addressing the flaws that I need addressed. Costly, but good things aren't cheap and cheap things aren't good.

    Sorry bud, that sucks.

The last two 4Runners we have bought needed windshields in the first week that we had them. I tried to tear the mirror off of my new Tundra. Cost me a grand. Only had it for three weeks. Just the glass in a new mirror with blind spot monitoring is 450 bucks.

We have insurance that covers our windshields with no deductible. Got a new windshield for our 2020 4Runner with all the tech stuff two weeks ago. It didn't cost us anything.

New purchase or immediately following payoff - it’s bound to happen to any vehicle I buy.

Thought I was the only one - guess not.

I had years of bad luck with new vehicles. My ex-wife would inevitably get dings, dents, scrapes in every new vehicle I would ever buy. I too thought screw getting new vehicles and watching them get beat to hell but I got smart and got rid of the wife… problem solved! No more trashed vehicles!

You need factory glass or else the front camera will likely not function properly.

The "detail" shop that installed my 3m film protection took it upon themselves to scratch my truck for me before I took ownership. Such a relief to know I wouldn't have to endure finding the first imperfection. It was a big ole scratch on the fender. They tried to buff it out with a buffer machine. Looked real sweet when I saw they had burnt right through to the primer. So a week later and it's back from being professionally fixed by a body shop. Can't even tell it happened. All this before I even owned it.
Hope it's preventing future damage by being sacrificed to the damage gods early in its life. Course I probably just jinxed it by mentioning this....

Yep I changed rims and the fools at Just Tires in Glendale CA broke one of my TPMS sensors. Now I get to try and find another for a 2021.
