I just changed out my 18” steel wheels to 20” Tundra premium alloys. The 20” have different lugs. It just dawned on me that my spare tire my not be compatible with the new lugs. Based on the diameter it seems the new wheel/tire are about 1” bigger than the 18” setup. Obviously I would only put on the spare in an emergency for short distances. My big concern is that the spare aren’t compatible with the alloy lugs. Does anyone know if this is a concern or will the spare fit? Thanks I’m advance

You could always keep and store 5 (or 10 I like having extras) old lugs nuts in the truck and use them if you needed to use the spare..
Just make sure you have something that fits them to take them on and off.

You can get a matching 5th wheel and tire. Then you can do a 5 tire rotation and your spare would be true size to the rest of your tires and not a small donut. You can fit up to a 35" tire under the truck. I carry a 37 spare in the bed, before I had a 295/70 under the truck
If your tires are larger than stock and you have a flat in the rear, you could be changing 2 tires so your drive axle tires are the same diameter.

I called the tire shop and fortunately they still have the lug nuts. So I’ll pik up 5 to store in case I need to change to the spare.

I am in the process of doing this very thing. I got a matching wheel off eBay and will get a TPMS sensor installed and mount a KO2. Then I’ll be able to rotate all 5 tires through including the spare.

And yes my understanding is that you definitely want the diameter of your wheel+tire spare to be the same as your others—or risk some kind of drivetrain calamity.
