Damn. I had a complete misunderstanding and thought they were like little German civics or corollas. At least it's in the 61%.

 

My 2006 Jetta with the 2.5 only had some electrical gremlins with the Nav and door lock / alarm system. Otherwise trouble free for 80k miles. My In Laws 08 2.5 had electric fan issues, they would go out periodically and required replacement, left and right at different times. Had the ABS Brake controller module fault, fixed with a $140 ebay module from a wrecked car. They got 148k miles out of theirs before selling. Overall, not bad.

 

Bees moved into one of my empty hives this year. I almost always get a new swarm in one of my hives every year.

 

I would take that with a grain of salt. Notice the GTI is somehow far more reliable, yet its the same platform. It would be interesting to know how many of each vehicle was surveyed.

Ze Germans are terrible with two things- power windows and anything electrical. I'm not as familiar with your generation of VW but just about all the 1.8 turbo cars commonly receive upgraded coil packs by enthusiasts for good reason. The factory ones tend to go weak quickly when boost is involved. Hopefully it is that or an easily fixed vacuum leak. Every time my mk4 1.8T has a misfire it is a vacuum leak, sometimes they are hard to find.

Did you get what the cel code was by chance? If you plan to keep the car and are pretty comfortable with reading engine codes I strongly suggest looking into Ross-tech and pick up their cable. It comes with license to download their app on your laptop or pc and you get all the cool diagnostic and testing abilities the dealership has. I picked one up last year and hate myself for not buying it 5 years ago.

@Jack McCarthy - this really depends on why they haven't finished processing your clearance. If there is an unreported violation since your last renewal (speeding ticket/court case/etc.), that is technically a second violation and has to be reviewed. Simple things are usually discharged in a couple days.

If they do suspend your clearance, it really depends on the situation. Obviously, you can continue to work on any program as long as you don't have access to classified data. If your DSS rep has been around a while, they can make some calls to expedite resolution.

It also comes down to the program. If it's run by a prime, or another gov't contractor, they can approve an individual to work on a project while waiting for a determination. So your program manager is really going to be the one to get an answer.

Good luck, but DSS is probably the only one who can speed up your renewal - unless your FSO has some good contacts.

Those two 1.8t VW engines couldn't be more different. Different architecture, different management, different pretty much everything.

Often with the older VW coils, as the power increases, the ignition dwell is increased past peak efficiency. Coupling that with an already mediocre design yields coils that barely get in the bed before shitting it.
I've seen a few of them actually catch fire. Good times.

I was surprised how much if a difference changing coils on mine made. I went for Hitachi from a 2.0 and it solved weird pulsing at idle and got rid of the hesitation at higher boost.

His 1.8 I believe has the weird plastic manifold built into the valve cover. Its not one I'm familiar with unfortunately but I know they have crappy coils like most other VWs.

 

Your 66 MB and my 79 Porsche are likely more mechanically sound as anything produced this century.

 

He has a last of the 888 TSI engines. It's a decent engine, but still runs VW/Bosch coils, TB, electronics, etc.
The 2.0TSI engines had timing chain tensioner problems. They'd bleed pressure while parked and then collapse. At start-up, the chain would jump and lunch the entire valvetrain. Plus the chains stretch over time.
And the rear main seals were this 'high efficiency' (super fucking cheap) garbage seal that will/would piss oil at the slightest crankcase pressure.

Aside from that stuff, they're pretty decent.
And there are well-documented fixes for the chain, tensioner, and rear main. They just kinda suck to install.

 

Thats good info. I haven't looked into those motors really, just occasionally see Humble Mechanic work on them and scratch my head. In a year or two when I sell my mk4 I will hang up my water cooled VW dancing shoes and stick to air cooled weekend cars.

I want a car that I won't tinker with or have to chase weird symptoms on, and won't have kids trying to race me all the time, very likely an LS460. Old man car but I could enjoy a smooth ride for once.

Super late edit: One of my goals for the 911 is Tier 1 reliability. I've still got a way to go. But I think it's attainable if I buy real fancy EFI and then get the calibration fully sorted. Obviously won't help the urge to tinker, but it's mechanically sound as a pound.

 

An FGT dressed as a luxury car with 380 buff ponies. Really more for the monthly trips to San Diego or Riverside or other long drives where a comfortable ride shines.

I might actually get my wifes old Scion back from her dad since we got him a nice used Camry this year and he hardly drives the scion anymore. Not a fun car to drive but as a commuter it would be fine. My work commute is only 4 miles so better to use a beater for those short cycles.

I would like to daily a big body Lex, but purchase price coupled with fuel price makes it somewhat unreasonable. My commute is ~25 miles each way. (80/20 hwy/city)

I've done it a few times but only in cooler months. In hot weather like right now I wouldn't go for it.

 

I try to support survivor bees. I have a few different top bar hives that I leave out. Sometimes they survive the winter sometimes they don't. I don't harvest much honey from them. Only when They are really doing good mid summer.

 

Awesome. I have fruit trees, and the pond, which provides them with all the water they need. Right now with our heat, my backyard is a Mecca for all kinds of birds getting a drink
