Im in AZ driving cross country (east) and out truck died. Waiting for aaa, hoping this is the fuel gauge issue I read about and a gallon of gas will get us off the road. truck cranks but won’t start, then seems to continue to try firing once I let go of the key.
118k miles just had the 120k service done at home. Any ideas?

Could be that pesky fuel pump control module too.

It was lack of fuel. AAA showed up about an hour after we were baking in the sun, put in 2.5 gal of gas and it fired right up.
I don't know how this fuel sender was never a safety recall item - we lost power doing 80 in the left lane with no warning.
Long day but all ended well.

What's the story with the fuel pump control module? Haven't heard of that.

A flaky fuel pump control module can let the truck turn over endlessly without actually starting and not give you any CEL or real indication of what's going on.

Usually these trucks read empty really early, it's likely there's an issue that needs some attention if yours is not.

Sender has always worked normally but I read about it here, and the former owner told me once he had a problem where it showed 1/4 tank but was actually empty. That was the case today.
I'll get it looked at, for the rest of the trip I showed my wife how to use the trip meter to ensure she doesn't go over 250 miles without refueling.
