Looking for overlanders!

Pretty funny how one simple word creates such as a stir. Does it really matter that much that one calls it overlanding and the other prefers camping? Does it really bother people that much? I personally call it camping but I don’t mind at all when someone associates my truck to overlanding. Its all the same but term coming from a different generation.

 

Hey Sunny! I’m still running with your ROAM tent. People keep trying to talk me into a hardshell but this tent has and continues to serve me well. Hope all is well!

 

All is well! I’m glad that’s working well for you. If your rack and bedsides are good, no sense spending more when the market for this gear has everything priced high. You came up in conversation the other day (roof rack talk); it’s nice you checked in! Stay well.

 

Seems to me calling it "overlanding" gives it level of sophistication that requires the purchase of a lot of cool looking (if you are into that anyway) equipment and accessories for the truck which may or not be a requirement for actual "camping".

 

No pix yet, but I’m still an old school camper shell guy. Simple, cab high camper shell. Done.

Aerodynamic and keeps gear out of sight, etc. Not eye catching.

I’ll always avoid rooftop tents for various reasons, but near top of the list is windy conditions. Loud azz, tent flapping in the wind can affect sleep in a big way. Ear plugs don’t help much at all. The tent can act as a sail and cause the truck to rock during windy conditions. No thanks.

Camper shell requires no set up. I use the Rubbermaid storage containers for most of the stuff and it’s real easy to dump everything on the ground when clearing the bed space. It’s ok for all of this stuff to sit in the rain.

Make sure to use a drop in bed liner. It will isolate you from the metal bed during cold weather camping. Sometimes I’ll position the truck accordingly, slide open only the sunny-side window to allow direct sunlight to enter the bed to make it surprisingly warm during cold, windy conditions.

Oh, and for more terminology fun, what most call off-roading is not. Real off-roading means no dirt road, trail or otherwise. Driving dirt roads is not off-roading. The road simply has a dirt surface instead of pavement. Real off-roading is illegal on most public lands.

 

Not all RTT's are created equally as I have no issues with windy conditions especially if I park into the wind. Clamshell design for the win with harsh conditions. With that said I am looking to get into a camper shell but it will he a high rise. Just a lot of advantages with a camper shell and my situation needs at this time. Hopefully the grass will be greener on the camper shell side. But there is compromises with any setup. Time will tell.

That looks pretty good right. Why get an RTT over that? Getting up to pee @ 3AM would be a PITA.

 

Not a pain at all with a dedicated Nalgene bottle. In fact easier and quicker than being at home.

 

I actually may post pone my Tundra Crewmax 2022 purchase and get this “OverVan” for Wife. Revisit the Tundra storm again this time next year.
A Go fast Rtt and With the 1500watt inverter - Should get me by for 18 months.

 

Just started building mine up. Came from a Tacoma got bed rack and lift installed today. Need to make some adjustments on the coil overs but overall it’s good. Whatever you want to call it Overlanding/camping it’s a lot of fun either way and having a rig capable of getting to some more remote spots it’s awesome.

Confession:

I could never understand why RTT’s and all the related rack etc. were becoming so popular.

But it just hit me. These set ups are probably popular because short bed trucks have also become so popular.

Most folks can’t sleep in a short bed.

I’m usually the last to figure out the obvious.

Yep I do too. I like that it's not permanent. When I take my son with me I make a cot platform that goes all the way across from pvc (again light easy to remove) and toss the futon mattress on it. My most extravagant thing is the fridge. But I love having it especially long trips.

I like the camper shell being in bear country and keeping general critters out. Desert mice will crawl all over and find their way inside tents. Even rtt

 

Ha ha… Bear country. You nailed it. I’ve had lots of bear encounters and will never sleep in a ground tent again.

And I hate meeces to pieces.

Finally got around to installing the RCI Bed Rack. RCI changed their rack design a bit on the shoulders, it now has rivets and a more modern design. I think it also has more slots on the cross bars, not sure though. It also comes with 9/16 hardware vs the 3/8 their instructions say. All in all, very happy with the rack, it's very solid clamped in by the bed cover. I didn't drill into the bed, I wasn't ready to do that on a truck with 11,000 miles, but if needed I can do it in the future.

The Tuff Stuff Alpha tent has been delayed a couple weeks at port. Hoping to have it in time before my Colorado trip first week of August

 

Weekenderlander here but sometimes a long-weekenderlander and sometimes a threeweeklander! Building the rig (researching, buying, and bolting on parts constitutes a "build" and a "rig" right?) is half the fun, and the time spent road tripping with family is the other half. Seeing amazing things, pushing how far we can super comfortably be self sufficient even though there's always a walmart within a couple hours drive. We also save money by not staying in hotels, ignore the fuel and truck expenses. It's kind of like having a beard, I only get comments and thumbs up from other dudes...

@rmvcard0303 Can I please get me details on your rear bumper/tire carrier? Pictures, especially from the side that show distance from end of truck bed to swivel mounts.

 

@Herring28 Nice. Method 701s? More info please on lift, height, adjustable UCA, tire size. Fitment of tires/rubbing?

Removed mudflaps pushed fender liner forward and heat gun. No BMC.

Really happy overall with it. Gives it a good stance without it being too big.
