Sucks that a life was lost but I'd be hard for anyone but his family to feel like it wasn't fair. If I caught someone under my vehicles I'd probably go running out there with a gun but I wouldn't shoot unless they threatened to.

Good Lord people. I'm clearly in the minority here, but it's a life. Yeah what he was doing was filthy and very low, but anyone can change and find redemption. I dare say anyone reading this has things in their past they're not proud of...me included. Thank goodness we were able to live long enough to change...this poor sap didn't. IMO we're not defined by our mistakes or failures - we're defined by who God says we are (even if unrealized yet), which makes us all sons/daughters; brothers/sisters. Some still lost, some not. /soapbox

I don't disagree with you. It was a life. But his own actions trying to benefit from hurting others caused his demise. I don't know about the others, but part of my crass response comes from my frustration at the lack of an effective justice system today. Penalties for crimes against others are far too lax. Victims suffer FAR more than the perpetrators, EVEN IF the perp is convicted. Harsher penalties deter crime. There is not much stealing in countries where they cut your hand off if you're caught.

I'm a perfect example of why a moment in time shouldn't define who or what I am. However, he was a thief and I have zero issues with the outcome. Something about play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Bummer, too bad a life was lost, but he did it to himself. I wouldn’t shoot someone who was trying to steal my shit, but I damn sure would want to. He rolled the dice and crapped out. That was a risk he took, knowingly or not. Maybe the punishment didn’t fit the crime, but is an adverse effect when you choose to do stuff like that without proper safety equipment utilized. Which is obviously the last thing your mind when you’re trying to steal someone’s shit! I shed no tears. I would prefer he was caught and punished appropriately, but I doubt he would’ve got more than a slap on the wrist. I don’t walk around thinking I’m judge and jury, but he payed the price for his stupidity.

I don't disagree with you either. But, I'd rather walk outside and deal with the irritation and monetary loss of finding my cats stolen, thank walk outside and seeing a dead guy under my truck. Was it his own doing. Yes of course. But my point goes back to "it's a life" (which I know you agreed with).
I guess I'm saying I'd rather see mercy (life) for the potential of seeing redemption, than see permanent, deserved judgement (death) with that potential lost forever.
Mercy doesn't mean no consequences - throw em all in jail. Absolutely. I agree that the penalties are far too lenient. But at least they'll have the opportunity to change. If they don't, they don't. If they do - everyone loves a genuine redemption.

Unnecessary loss of life is always a tragedy, be it an insect all the way to a blue whale, or human. I'm not going to feel sorry for any thief, but that particular punishment is reserved for filth.

Again - any life lost young is sad - but I feel for the family, not the dipshit who wasted a life.

Addiction is rough…but we need to stop assuming EVERY theft is a result. Sometimes it’s just about easy money and laziness.

Thieves have no morals and recognize there’s easy money to be made. They take what they are smart enough to know how to steal. If they were brighter - they’d have been hacking into banks or holding pipelines for ransom - these guys aren’t the sharpest but they know how to steal a sawz all from the hardware store and then use it.

Wanna show you care - go help a charity that supports people trying to build careers. Don’t waste your time posting how their life was valuable - they didn’t recognize it - why should you.

My view that all life has intrinsic worth isn't dependent on how someone sees themself.

Every life IS valuable. Either as an example, or as a warning.

There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves. - Will Rogers

I will add that there are some that have to pee on that fence more than once.

That's wrong on several levels. If the thief's actions kill him, it's karma. If you see it happen and let him die, it's murder.

Yes, the same way that the people that buy stolen copper are complicit in the electrocution of some copper thief that taps a live wire.
