1st Gen. Lunch Table - General Discussion

Hey guys, I’ve been patiently working at this all day (I have to break for other fambly projects, but that’s stopped me getting impatient and breaking things... so far... so I’m going along with it). I’ve unfastened everything I “see” and wiggled around the edges trying to identify any additional hidden fasteners. I think these (pictured, one on each side) have to come out... and I’m guessing they’ll break-?
I can kind of see behind this by using the selfie camera but it’s too dark when I take a pic: essentially, it looks like a fairly large diameter plastic “screw”... I think really it’s a push-in designed to not back out.

Any way to remove it?
Any way to remove it without breaking these and whatever they push into?
if I break ‘em, are they realistically replaceable?

I do have a molding tool set, in case there’s a truck that requires one, and if you can describe it....

 

It's a push in design. I ordered new ones in March of 2020 when I detailed the carpet. Removed that trim which broke those.

Total cost was like <$3

I'm not sure if there is a way to remove them without breaking them. Others here may know.

 

I have the DC/sequoia console so mine overlaps a little but I’m pretty sure that this portion of the dash doesn’t get removed.

 

Either way yea, push the center button in until it snaps. Then you can pull out on the outside part. These are very typical and if you break one you can buy it for pennies at any NAPA.

I dunno if you’re tying to get the entire top and bottom out for the radio but the only experience I have is with pulling this.


Edit: wait no I was totally wrong. I’ve pulled both the upper and lower dash. Not sure if this helps.

I am trying to pull the entire dash, including (with the specific goal of) that portion you scribbled in yellow. I could fish wiring through, just pulling the pretend-burl-wood radio surround, but I want to fit the base unit where the slide out cup holder was. So I need to get at it from the back to remove the cup holder surround that’s there now, and also find a way to secure the ham base to the bulkhead or firewall... whatever back there is structural.

Headed back out to try breaking those tabs, knowing I can grab replacements at Napa (thanks!).

You just push that little center "pin" all the way through. It spreads out tabs to hold the outer ring in place. The center pin can push all the way through until it falls out the back (use a straightened paper clip), then the outside ring will freely pull to you. Once the dash is out you will find the center pin & can re-use the whole shebang. If you can get to the backside, you can push the pin out to you to remove & not lose it.

 

Took the commuter to the grocery store because access cabs aren't great for that task. The car finally told me as plain as can be what I thought it was hinting at. This is not good.

Sadly, I didn’t understand the previous post about pushing the center, and it didn’t work on first try. Your instructions help me understand... for next time .

I found enough of the broken bits to get the gist of how they’re designed to work. Good news is, it’s looking like re-securing this lowest panel will be occur near the conclusion of my project, so all will be well.

I sure appreciate the help, Guys! All of you that have chimed in have helped me understand.

ordered a redarc tow-pro elite for the truck. i have a pilot brake controller. but i hate those bulky things. this one the button/dial is remote mounted and the box can be tucked up in the dash. much better. be here in 2 days so i can install it and be ready for sunday to get my new truck

Can anyone point me to some good resources on intake manifold removal.

Truck went into limp mode and check engine light came on. Had the codes pulled, P1441 and P1444 something to do with the secondary air system. Thing has a nasty vacuum leak so I'm thinking its a vacuum hose but either way I need to rip the manifold off. I kinda went in half blind and after spilling a bunch of coolant, some gas and cutting some 16 year old hoses I got all the bolts and nuts off. Fuel rails got unbolted fuel cross rail, throttle body (wanted to clean it while I was in there). Rear orange fuel return line cut the really old fuel regulator hose ( the one on the bulb thingy on the passenger side fuel rail). The front of the manifold is loose but I can't pull the back up. Do I just need to unbolt the bracket under the plug on the top back drivers side of the manifold?? I've already committed my Memorial day to this so feel free to just crush my heart with the disappointment.

 

On a good note. My Brute force fab bumper makes a great work bench.

Doesn't feel like much of a Holiday weekend here. Been raining 3 days straight.

 

We've got a local battlefield that does reenactments too.

 

I feel your pain.. I ordered an inline softener to try.

 

I'm not a huge fan of mine. It works but the tekonesha(no idea on spelling) seems to have better programing. They also have a dash button option now. I've considered switching.

 

Just do a custom dash with the cage.

 

i found one of these at a garage sale. The rainx stuff that comes in it is meh, but i mix some jet dry and water into one of the tanks, and it helps with water spots. After washing, drive around to get the drips out, then give the truck a light spray, and start drying.

it can sit in the driveway and look clean for a day or so, but a gravel driveway robs alot of the enjoyment of a good wash.

 

A street corner find!

Not sure if you guys have ever tried the method of rinsing where you use just the hose without a sprayer. Basically, flood the surface with water and the surface tension pulls most of the drops off that a Sprayer leaves behind. Works!
