Hey everybody, so I have a 2007 Tundra SR5 4.7L. For several years now, I've been having trouble with my truck dying while I'm driving it (as if it's out of gas), but the gas gauge still shows that I have gas. Initially, it would die when my gauge showed 1/4 tank, but then it progressed to dying at 1/2 reading. As soon as I fill it up with gas, it runs fine. So for several years now, I have been making sure to fill up before I reach half a tank to avoid getting stranded on the road. I've been told that it may be some kind of fuel sensor assembly that has to be replaced and that it would be expensive (which is why I haven't gotten it fixed yet), but I wanted to get your opinions.

I have the exact same problem on my 2007 4.7L. I just fill up every 200 miles to be safe now. Two shops quoted me around $1200 to replace the fuel sensor. I’m sure it could be done for cheaper.

Sounds strange that a sensor would cause the truck to act like it’s out of gas when it’s just low on gas. When this problem arises, have you tried crack in the gas cap open? Wondering if there’s some type of clogged vent line. Sounds silly, but we have a similar issue with small engines at work when the vented gas cap seems to be clogged.

With mine the truck runs completely out of gas but the gauge stays a little above a quarter tank.

OK so that’s your fuel level sensor going bad. I was thinking the OP just had to fill up at half tank otherwise it would run like crap. But it sounds like do you think it may be the fuel level sensor gone bad and half a tank is actually empty. That would make more sense for sure.

Yea, that's about what the dealership wanted to charge me too. I have a guy who could do it for less, but he takes too long and I can't be without a vehicle for days.

Any damage on your tank? I had a big dent in the middle of my tank on my Rav4 that did the same. Depending which side the fuel ended up on, it would die and then when loading on a flat bed, it would slosh into the other side and run at the shop no issues.

Thank you for all of the responses. I ended up buying the fuel pump assembly for about $300 and then taking it to a "Bring Your Own Parts" auto shop and they replaced it for about $350. Everything is working great now and I paid about half of what the dealership was going to charge me.
