Am I Crazy? Sell my 2020 for a 2006 1st Gen?

Am I crazy? I’m debating if I should sell my 2020 TRD Off-Road SR5 Double Cab and get a 1st Gen Limited? My 2020 will be paid off Dec 2022 but where trade in values are these days, I’d make $4-5k more than what I paid for my 2020.

2006 Double Cab Limited only has 135,000 miles for $9,500.

Sometimes I don’t think I need this nice of a truck and should be fine with a 1st Gen. Another plus for getting something much cheaper is it would allow me to get another “dream” rig I’ve been eyeing for years (a Eurovan or Vanagon for #vanlife).

Has anyone here downgraded similarly before? My cement 2020 and 1st pics below:

 

I guess it depends how you use your truck. Will you miss the creature comforts of the 2020? I bet insurance and registration is a lot less on the first gen, plus you won’t have to worry about the value going down much or if you get a ding or chip. Okay I talked myself into it.

 

If it makes you happy that's all that matters. My dream truck was a 3rd gen 4runner and that's because I grew up loving them. Got a 2000 in 2008 when I was also eyeing a 2007 m3. I loved it even though it was an older vehicle, I still have it 13 years later and I'd do it again if I could.

I downgraded from a 5th gen 4Runner SR5 to a 4th gen 4Runner Sport V8. Never looked back! Enjoy it much more, paid off, performance is better, like the size more. Really one of my favorite Toyota vehicles I’ve had.

 

Had a 2006 limited 4dr 1st gen before my 2013. it rode better, seats were more comfortable, it was the perfect size and really all I needed.
I like the safety of the 2nd gen with stability control and all the airbags, traction control is nice too.
So ya, 1st gen for the win but I would still take my current ride for the conveniences.

That's a really good deal on a 1st gen DC if the frame is good. With the profit on your 2020 you're essentially getting the truck for 5 grand if you cash in now. Sounds like a win all around - go for it!

 

Reliability is a wash, so that's not an issue. If maintenance is up to date I say go for it. Getting your van will also keep miles off the first gen, keeping that resale value high.

Post this in the first gen section of you want to be talked into the switch

 

If the 1st gen is rust free and had the timing belt, water pump, pulleys, fluids done in the last 30k miles I’d do it. If the timing belt and all that goes with it have not been done or there is any rust issues then plan on spending another $2-3k or more sooner than later on maintenance and fixing rust so it doesn’t get worse.

 

You are crazy to do it. I would eat beans and rice for the next 18 months to pay it off than to take a massive downgrade.

 

If you can make money on the 2020 and have no payment on the 06 I don’t see where the downgrade is other than eating beans and rice for 18 months if you’re keeping it. Considering in 24 months you’ll probably be able to get the same 2020 for $10k less than they are selling for now and the 1st gen will still be worth $12-15k in the PNW just south of him.

 

I would sell your 2020 and take advantage of the sky high prices right now, then I would buy a cheap beater to drive for a year, then I would buy a next gen 2023 when prices come back to Earth.

I sold my 07 Tacoma for an 04 Tundra and Paid cash. It’s
A great truck and I still think it’s the perfect size. If you drive a lot , then no it’s not worth it to me.
But if you’re an 8k a year guy. You could make it work for a while.

 

I did something similar went from a 3gen Tacoma to a 2gen Tundra with the 4.7 . was looking fro a 1st gen but couldn't find a good one so got a 2007 . D the timing belt and it will last and I made 20k

 

Man when I upgraded from my 2001 to my 2010 it was such a huge improvement. No way I would be able to downgrade. It might seem cool in the beginning, but the novelty would wear off SUPER quick for me on a daily driver.

I would work at paying off the 2020, and just put off your Van project for a year and a half until that’s done.

 

I had an '06 for 245,000 miles and a '20 for 25,000 miles.

The seats in the first gen, while smaller, are more comfortable

 

So like...how much you want for your 3rd Gen? Lol

True that. Possibly? I got my 2nd gen for super cheap from a friend. May be able to sell for 2x what I paid. Might be worth selling mine and buying newer even with inflated prices.

 

Don't do it. Keep the gen 3...More refined tundra

 

If you can deal with less space and less power... It sounds like you are already wanting the 1st gen. I hate the rear storage setup and I wish mine had more power. Big tires and stock gears don't help me much though.

If you are towing I'd stay with the bigger engine. If you are going off road maybe the 1st gen could be more nimble. If you are just cruising then it sounds like either. If you can live without some comforts or are willing to put them in the first gen then there is that. Cameras are easy to do, navigation stuff isn't bad, katzkin leather is a nice upgrade, seat heaters are pretty easy, nice headlights can be had affordably if you diy.

I already have both trucks too and could be perfectly happy back in the 1st Gen full time with the cash sitting in the Bank I think!

...don’t get rid of that beautiful 3rd gen. Yes it would be crazy... Drive it till it’s as old as the 1st Gen=problem solved.
