    Hi,
Thinking of selling or trading in my 2020 DC Sports. Do you think I would get more with the Leer cap on or try to sell it by itself?
    Looking for opinions.

Sell the cap yourself, the dealer doesn't care.

^this will get you more money, but will be more hassle. Caps are hard to sale IMO due to being painted, you have to find a buyer with the same color truck. If it were me, I would just trade as is and not deal with it.

Hmm… if you have time, try selling the cap and see if you get any hits. It won’t bump the value of your truck so if you can sell it quickly then you’ll be $$$ ahead.

Values for those things vary. But I seen work trucks with a different colored canopy all the time. Given how old the truck’s design is you might find a contractor that just wants a cheap way to secure their tools and doesn’t care about the color.

Ask dealer how much with, ask how much without.

Then decided if it's worth your time and trouble to remove it (potential damage to both cap and truck), time and hassle to sell used and deal with lowball offers etc and store store for months until it eventually sells for 1/2 of what you thought it would.

A local dealer actually gave me a larger offer if I took the cap off. Claimed it decreased value of the truck because the market was limited to people that wanted the bed covered with it.

I kept the truck and the topper.

The used market for caps is pretty good now considering the supply chain delays in getting a new one. Try posting it here, CL, Facetube Mktplce etc, you'll probably get a lot of interest.

My experience is that every buyer will say that they don't want the cap even if they do. Sell it on your own and profit. As stated above, with the supply being so far out right now, it should sell fairly quickly.

I've sold two ARE toppers. Fairly quickly at the price I asked for. Both buyers didn't care that the toppers didn't match the paint of their respective Tundras. Sell it. Dealer won't add squat value at all. Don't over price it. Ask a reasonable price to move it fast. Will be better than what you might get from the dealer.

So you have a place to keep the cap and do you feel like dealing with stupid calls/messages and “will it fit my…”

In my experience - the market for used/color matched caps is a thin one. Thinner if it’s for a 6’5 bed Toyota alone (don’t know what else your might fit).

I mean those things cost a ton of money - but it’s more preference than anything. Just like wheels/exhaust/ect…but unlike some mods this one does not have a market of ask 100 owners and the majority would buy it offered used. Maybe 5 outta 100 would - and then you gotta find someone with the color and bed size.

I’d get there offer as it sits - try to negotiate what you feel fair value of the cap and if they say no - tell them your not selling pieces - all or nothing - you don’t want it - then you sell it yourself separately.

Can’t tell you the number of free caps and toolboxes I got offered when I had an office in a dealership for work. Usually just told em toss it in back and found a taker eventually.

DC stuff like toppers, tonneaus, nerfs for example sell faster than CM on Craigslist. At least here in Denver Metro. I know from experience. CM items are a dime a dozen. I've always sold my DC 6.5' items fast. I recently bought a RetraxOne for $200! Seller said that most people who called about it owned CMs.

Is it because contractors need the longer bed?

Both buyers of my ARE's were hunters and simply wanted a topper to sleep in. Having a DC does have its advantages due to the two bed length choices. Too many CM toppers on Craigslist and such. So many are asking near full price and toppers depreciate a lot...quickly.

I’ll agree - market area makes a HUGE difference. Research your local market first.

And yes - asking 85% of the cost of new is likely to result in a long wait between inquires. To me 50% of cost is “priced to sell” - but your market may vary.

And again - you only have 1 to sell. Just need to find the right buyer. You might search high and low to find them - or you may luck out and find 2 buyers in your first day. Research your local market. There are plenty of reasons for wanting a cap - but those reasons may not be fueling demand in your market.

Truth^^^^. The majority of used cap buyers are cheap bastards. They would never consider paying close to retail. I looked for used before buying my cap and with no cement CM out there, I ordered new and bit the bullet.

I have bought and sold a lot of shells and there is little that you can predict in advance about selling them because you have no idea who wants one or when.

I price them to move and have not had trouble at all but every time I am thinking it will never sell?

I thought I would NEVER find a Long Bed shell for my 3rd gen but I bought 3 different shells in 3 weeks for insane low prices when I needed to!?

The Color is also not seemingly a huge deal breaker to those looking for something quick and dirty and that is the only way I try to sell them!

I vote sell it yourself. literally the dealer will not care or give you much more money for it. However they will mark it up because it is on there.

When I traded my first 01 RCLB with a cap for a nicer one the dealer was relieved that I wanted to transfer the cap and had guys waiting there to help me do it to get me out of there!
