What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

New guy. Picked up this 2006 Access Cab about a month ago and it's been a great addition. Got a deal on some 701s and Costco had a sale going for BFGs so Old Scrappy got some new shoes. Also installed the Eibach Pro Truck Lift and she's riding great.

 

I don't know why I love those wheels so much, but I do. When I get to where I can start overhauling my DC I'm thinking it's getting some bronze methods.

The nicer wheels from it can replace the goofy starfish wheels on my 2001, lol.

 

Heard a clunk. Wallered around in the parking lot out here 58 miles from the house.

My front left cam bolt is loose, and slopping around in the slotted hole on the frame. No tools present.




Cam plate is supposed to be in the notch on the frame point out by the pink arrow.

I'll limp her home, and snug her up. Sorta. Friday I felt like she was pulling to the left, so I called the local tire place and scheduled an alignment for this morning at 8 am.

Right after I hung up I thought it was pulling to the right. Now I know why it was going back and forth. (I assumed the shitty tie rod ends I put on were the culprit.)

 

Got'er home about 30 minutes ago. Pulled the skid.

Cut access points in the skid for new crows foot 22mm wrench for post alignment torque without removal of skid.


Here is position of cams before mending.


Both sides should be pointing same direction. Torqued to 97 ft.lbs. drove up to the chapel and swayed back and forth. No clunk.

Either passenger seat is squeaking, or antenna from turkey impact. Something squeaky on passenger side now, but I think it's minor.

Never. I should probably repaint them for the time being though. Yours look quite nice, and the finish has chipped from the center piece on 2 of mine.

One can only assume he gathered up all the grimy oil soakers from the bottom of the driveway post-wash.

Older fella in front of me at the counter didn't seem to comprehend anything that the cashier was saying. She was explaining that he couldn't pay in advance for service done today before it was completed. The ticket must be closed within their system before payment can be received.

They went back, and forth for a few minutes in circles before the manager showed up with large coffee in hand, and visibly high blood pressure. He explained everything she explained exactly the same way she had. He understood it then.

Older customer said "Okay, well I'll be back anyways. About 6:00 pm."

The manager said "Sir, we close at 5. We'll call you when your car is done, and we will get your card number for payment over the phone."

Customer: "I don't have any cards except my drivers license."

Just back, and forth.

My conversation was much easier.

Cashier: "HI, how can I help you?"

Me: "Here for my 8:00am alignment. My name is Noah."

Cashier: "You're the guy with the 02 tundra?"

Me: "That's right."

Cashier: "I remember you from last year. I'll have you first in the shop. I still need your phone number to pull up your account though."

Me: "My number is...."

Cashier: "Alright, I've gotcha down. You know the drill. We'll come get you when we're done."

Me: "Alright, thanks y'all!"

 

Thank you, but it only took it since Friday to work loose enough to slop around in the frame. I would have continued the assumption that it was shitty tie rods causing pull if it hadn't clunked at parking lot speeds. I can't really believe that since friday I've put about 430 miles on it. most of which was high speed back roads.

I brought all tools necessary to torque to spec with me. I'll do that before I leave the tire shop which is why I cut the skid plate.

 

Tech just drove off for test drive after alignment. Heard squeak sitting on outside bench. Think it's something in the passenger side front end that's squeaky. I'll have to go back through it this weekend as I am running out of steam before needing sleep today.

Them clear corner white led switch backs look great rolling down the road.

 

Tech explained that the system they use marked the right caster as out of spec, but was still in spec.

Should I look into mending this? @Darkness and any other suspension gurus present?

 

The good news is I don't think that would cause uneven wear on your tires. It might make your truck feel a little different turning left vs right, but I doubt it would be noticeable.

I think they should have been able to get you into spec, I don't see a reason not to. You don't have frame damage or anything like that. Looks to me like they did the old "toe and go" method of adjusting your tie rods and not bothering with the cam bolts.

 

Based on gut feelings, I'd agree with you. About 30 minutes in the shop. Including drive in, and test drive.

Apparently, my dash cam was on the whole time it was in the shop. Unfortunately, it can't see underneath.

Looked like they had some sort of laser alignment checker. Hunter brand. Imagine a hammer head shark, but with frickin laser beams for eyes.

Hunter are about the best machines you can ask for from what I understand, as long as the operator knows what they're doing.

 

Good info on the hunter brand. I was pretty much done with the local raben, and this is their final nail in the coffin for me.

I'll have to call up the other shop in town, or go back to the other other shop 50 something Miles away. I feel like they did everything correctly. It was an all day event though which I don't have time for during the week.

It was my fuck up of not verifying torque on cams. I will say that the crows feet, and new access points on the skid plate worked perfectly. Not bad for a "Ah, fuck it. I'm trying this now."

 

In their defense they aren't that far out of spec. I can't recall but I think the top end is 2.4 or so. Lots of guys run over on caster, it shouldn't hurt.

 

Has anyone ran these “alignment cam eliminator plates”. Been seeing them on YouTube more and more.

If I'm to pay another $105 I want it done right. I understand that they were busy, but that's not a light chunk of change. The price had increased $45 since I was last there.
