    Hey guys,

When I got home yesterday I noticed a large puddle of oil in the driveway under my 04 Tundra. It had not been driven that day so I climbed underneath and there is oil constantly running out where the engine and trans bolt up together. Has anyone ever seen this before? Even while parked and not running there is a steady drip.

Sounds like a rear main seal has failed completely. I don’t remember if there’s oil galley plugs back behind the trans or not. But either way, transmissions gotta come out

Considering the water pump and timing belt are on different sides of the motor this is much less likely. BUT. If the engine was really overfilled with oil, you could end up with a random extreme failure of a seal like this

If they pulled the valve covers they could have forgotten to reseal the back U plugs and that would leak bad

This is very much true. But I don’t know why they’d remove the covers for a t belt replacement. Unless they did cam seals too

Just to update, finally pulled the trans out and it is not coming from the rear main, the flywheel has to come out next.

On all the 2UZFE timing belt/wp's I've done, I never touched anything that would cause an oil leak.

Glad it wasn't your rear main. Too bad you had to pull the tranny to diagnose that. My 05 had a rear main fail four years after I bought it new, so the factory warranty covered the whole repair.

Thanks for the pics. Looks like you’re tracking things back to the Transmission being the leak?

yes sir, at this point it looks to be more of a transmission leak and the flywheel is coming out today. Should know more once that happens.

So it turns out the fluid was ATF and not engine oil?

only 2 things that can leak there (well 3.. but coolant is obviously not oil.. trans fluid can be confused if its burnt. Transmission input seal. (VERY RARE unless the trans has been out before.) or rear main seal/retainer

The guys at the shop replaced rear main and pump seal, should have it back today just waiting on trans mount to show up.

So the Rear Main was a problem.

The Pump Seal you refer to is the Oil Pump Seal on the front of engine?

Yeah rear main seal adapter, I believe the pump seal is called auto trans fluid pump seal. They also discovered 3 broken bolts where the transfer case mounts up.

Pretty sure that's where mine is leaking, rear main. Curious to know how many dealership dollars that is to replace. Also terrified to let them do it. Such a big job though. Draining and pulling the trans and transfer case. Disconnecting the drive lines. Removing the flywheel, replacing the seal and then re-installing everything. Good time for fresh trans fluid, filter and new U-joints all around. It's gonna really have to start pissing in the driveway for me to want to tackle that.

Ye. I’ll wait to do this job when:

    1) That Rear Main really starts leaking and then just do the Transmission Rebuild at the same time.

    2) When the Transmission blows.

When our Rav4 was leaking from the rear main the stealership quoted me almost $2,000 to fix the seal. Thankfully it stopped leaking almost 3 years ago and hasn't happened since.

I switched to 20W-50 with some stop leak in my old S-10 when the rear main seal went out on it. It stopped leaking.

Hey guys, description of repairs :

Removed transfer case and transmission. had to replace some transmission mount bolts, crossmember bolts, drilled out bolts in the transfer case to transmission bolts that broke off in the extension housing of the transmission. Replaced front seal in transmission pump, removed rear main seal adapter, resealed adapter plate and replaced the rear main seal. Reinstalled transmission and topped off transmission fluid

It goes to the fabricator today, a new rear diff cover to fix seepage. I went with the Barnes heavy-duty diff cover. I will post photos once complete.

So I am finally back on the road, the fabricator cut the old diff cover off and welded on a new Barnes heavy duty diff cover, also replaced the axle seals. Then it was over to the exhaust shop to replace the resonator and pipe. So far so good.
