Ok - so got an unexpected call. Local used car dealer has a 2020 Pro - and they are semi reasonable on price.

Barely used of course, clean with no accidents and stick aside from bed liner

The dilemma- I have a 2021 on order with a build date in May. Do I just go with the order and pay sticker - or try for a deal on this one (if possible). Then if dealing on used - what’s fair?

I’m thinking IF I could get used for say sticker less 2500 - that’s a deal. Worst case - I pay 2500 more, move up a year and get full maintenance and warranty. Realistically- I think that’s worth more like 1k-1500….but 2500 seals the deal.

Local Toyota dealer got a 2019 voodoo blue pro in with 30k miles. It was put on the lot at $58,xxx then a week later raised it to $60k. Someone bought it. Personally I'd wait for your ordered one.

Do you have a buy contract on the May build unit?

I personally don’t get the “color collector” mindset.

Yes, they only make these colors for 1 year in general - so they are less common. But paying more for a used - I don’t get…it’s not as if 20 years from now someone is gonna be like “ohhh…that’s a super rare and valuable VooDoo Blue Tundra Pro”.

Again - as I keep saying too - don’t mistake ASK for SELLING too…a dealer can ask 58 and can up the price. Doesn’t mean they GOT 60, maybe they used it to hook a buyer into thinking they “got a deal” at 56….but I doubt nothing in this market right now.

I am content to wait - after all my situation is somewhat different. It’s not like I woke up yesterday - decided I want that and my option is take what’s on the lot now OR search/order and wait. I can have new and have it in weeks - not months.

Don’t know why - but used is just a tiny bit of a concern. You know - 99% of these things are as they seem - clean, accident free and problem free. Still what posses someone to buy a 55k vehicle and sell it months later….not having what they thought they needed, not getting that warm feeling they thought they would have every day, financial issues or was there a problem?

I can put that feeling aside personally for 2500 or so (the cost of a comprehensive warranty and a grand in savings) - but I sure wouldn’t pay MORE just to get it now. Me personally though - I guess some buyers will always be impulsive and will pay for that impulse.

It’s not as if used is flawed and new is perfect - the flaw rates are about the same in both. Even a vehicle with 0 miles can have issues.

    Yes - signed sales agreement.

The dealer would have 0 issue though just ripping it up - after all, they can either sell to next buyer on the list - put it in the lot for some sorely needed buyers inventory or do a dealer swap with some very tempting bait.

It’s not like I would be hurting their feelings giving them a valuable commodity in times of a shortage. I’d be doing them a favor almost - just like I joked with the dealer who managed to get me a LR Pro a few weeks ago - it almost feels like I’m doing you a favor letting you keep the allocation you got using my name - you should pay me or at least give me a free hat or something.

When the used vs new prices are so close (did you take mileage on the used into account?) buying new is generally the better deal due to warranty length, lack of unknown mods or non-Toyota repairs, etc. I originally set out to buy used in early 2020, but the used prices were so high, and I got such a discount off MSRP, that it made much better sense to get the new one.

If you are financing, you can often get better rates on new as well so even if you save a couple grand on the used truck, you may end up paying more in the long run because of higher rates. I would rather buy new, I would be suspicious of why they are already being sold. Is it a lemon? or did it just not fit their needs or budget after they bought it?

If they're certifying the used truck you get a 7 year/100k mile drivetrain warranty. Our local dealer values that certification at $1,995.

Then I vote: stay with the truck you've ordered.

Agreed. Used Tundra markups are crazy right now, stick with your original sales contract and price.

Depends on what they will sell the Pro for, which you never mentioned. If they are offering a good deal it may be worth considering. If what they are offering is not in your best interest, wait for your order.

If under 5k miles, $2k less than new and dealer certified that may sway me. If not all 3 boxes are checked, I’d wait for new.

Honestly, if I am spending $40-50,000 on a truck, I will spend the extra $2,000 to have the brand new truck. I would have to save $5-10,000 for it to really be worth it to me personally.

Yeah just get the new truck, if you're financing you'll get better interest rates and honestly what's the point of saving that best case $2500 when you're already spending over 50k on a truck. Might as well get a brand new, just built truck.

I decided it’s not worth it for me. I bought a 2018 limited CM last year CPO for $39k. It still smelled new inside and I have a 7 year 100k power train warranty. It had 18k miles.

Resale prices are crazy. I traded in my 2017 CM TRD on a new 2021 Pro..... my 4th Tundra (after 4 Tacomas). For the first time in my life I paid sticker price. The dealer now has my 2017 on the lot as a CPO for exactly what I paid for it 3.5 years ago.

Thanks - wife voted new too…and her vote obviously holds the most weight.

Like I said - 2k is my “tipping point”

Might be me - but just feels like I’m taking a slight gamble on used and when I gamble - I expect reward for my risk.

I lose the 2 years maintenance (worth what $150) and half the 3/36 warranty- (let’s call it worth 1500 total so 750) - so that’s 900 - finally a year is worth 1k on a new truck.

Told used car dealer I’m not gonna insult you with an offer probably not any higher than Carvanas current offer price - but if things change hit me up and we can talk.

If anyone needs a Pro badly - lmk and I will share their info. Gotta a feeling with the pipeline outage and the mad dash for the pumps - this ain’t gonna be the only dealer in NC trying to sell a Tundra FAST. Funny how $4 gas changes priorities.

So I would go with the new truck and my reason is,
there not going to get cheaper and in a year they might still be hard to come across with the chip shortage.
Dealers aren't getting hardly any un-ordered trucks, and yours has a better chance of being made bc it's ordered.
If you decide you don't want it, sale it back.
On Carvana I was offered just under what I paid for my 2019 Limited, the dealership offered me slightly more.
So after you get it, drive it, and you still have that option to sale it close to the price you paid.
Now I get it, that wont last forever.
But I never made money off a car, but this one I have the option to lose the least.
