    Codes:
    P0766
    P0776
    P2714

Transmission shifts smoothly to either 3rd or 4th gear. I should have checked which top gear it's going into, but I didn't. But certainly no 5th or 6th gear is engaging.

I get a Check Engine light, flashing 4Low light, flashing VSC off, and a traction control light.

I bought the truck used and do not know if the transmission has ever been serviced. I know it has not been serviced since 120k miles.

I have not touched a thing. Have not checked fluid levels, condition, or attempted to change a solenoid(s).

I guess what I'm asking is, is this a common issue? Or is there a common fix before I start wasting time?

Not really common... you may need have the transmission serviced either by DIY or have someone drain and fill.. no flush or it will go sideways quickly..

Drain and fill your ATF every 30,000 miles. For what you have going on, I would drain and fill, then drive 30 minutes, then repeat the process until the fluid you drain comes out looking like new. Be sure to use fluid from your dealership to be on the safe side.

Update: Transmission fluid smelled burned. I opt'ed to have the transmission rebuilt. Also replaced the solenoids that were giving fault codes, the S4 and EPC.

    Converter
    Overhaul kit
    Bonded pistons
    Filter
    Shift kit
    Boost valve kit
    Plug kit
    Fluid and solenoids
    $1980

Had an indy shop do the rebuild. Removing the transmission from the 5.7L is a job. Kind of a nightmare. Total labor came to $1520. Total job was $3500 and the shop gave a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty.
