Wait or Buy (pre-owned)

Howdy

I'm finally making the move from GM to Toyota.
I'm looking at 2015-2020 4x4 Platinum's.

The question is do I wait for the next Gen to come out or buy now ?

ie, Will the new/next year model/s make that much of a dent in price's for pre-owned ?

Possibly the worst time in history to buy a new or used vehicle. Wait if you can.

If you are looking to buy a Pro and find one at msrp that is the normal price for the Pro. But if you are looking at any other model tundra bad time to buy now. Most dealer charge msrp for the Pro. They usually don’t knock any money off them because they sell without discounting them.

 

I would wait as long as you can unless you are ready to pay full price. Supply chains are still hosed up slowing down production of new vehicles. Whatever inventory currently exists is going for a high premium.

Tough call! I came from a GM 2500HD POS!!! The chip shortage is driving supply down and prices up...It’ll probably be a year or so? No doubt your going to pay more with supply issues! But I know all to well how much unreliability can cost! I usually buy used, but used Tundras are at a premium right now! Take your time and you’ll find something priced reasonably..2022’s?? You might be waiting longer than you think! Keep an eye out here!

I sure wouldn’t buy new now, or maybe ever. Search private party. May get lucky.

 

Just like the COVID vaccine; search,search, and search some more. Then pounce on the first decent price that you find. If you wait too long, the time slot or in your case the truck that you want will be gone. They are out there and most likely from a private seller so keep looking.

 

Well said! Research! I just picked up a used 19' 4runner for my wife, sr5 premium 4x4 44k plus ttl.
I could've saved maybe a couple thousand a year ago and new? But just to give you some insight. I know it's not a Tundra lol. I've seen tundras with up to 10k markup and not even trd package.

 

PS, I wouldn’t but the first year of any new Gen any manufacturer. That’s just me.

 

I have a friend who works at a local GM dealer. They got one brand new Sierra on the lot the other day. Before the end of the day they had six full MSRP offers and it sold within a few hours of being off loaded from transport. Unless you absolutely need a new vehicle now I'd wait. On the flip side, trade ins are getting some great payouts right now too so maybe it's all a wash.

Absolutely agree. If I was buying any other trim than a Pro, I'd be very nervous that I was overpaying. I'm buying slightly under MSRP and feel like I'm stealing it compared to some of the other crazy prices I've seen for these things. Waiting is certainly the right move unless you have to buy today.

 

Narrow your search to certified pre-owned. Great warranty with them. Typically well maintained vehicles too. If you find something in your price range, go for it.

 

Echoing what's been posted- waiting is your best bet for now...

BUT - be prepared to buy if the right deal comes along. Simply put most dealers are hiring prices because they have nothing to replace sold inventory with. No one wants to be sitting on an empty lot when a buyer with more $$ than sense walks in the door. There are still deals out there- the closer you get to 2015 - the more likely you are to see them on trucks.

Otherwise, be as flexible as possible...for example do you need 4wd ? I'm seeing alot of 2wd deals out there of late...just not nearly as strong of sellers.

 

Yup, either wait or be ready to drop cash. That being said if you're buying new Fred Haas Toyota is showing 40+ Tundras in stock and they have some platinums. Go through carpro and deal with Ryan Bullock and he'll make the purchase as easy as its going to be right now. Finance is generally not very pushy either if you do the carpro thing. Bought my wife's Rav4 there, have bought a couple other cars there and parts. I ended up buying my Tundra at Sterling McCall Katy cause it was used and a great deal but I had to listen to the finance guy forever trying to talk me into bad financial decisions lol. I was there this morning getting some oil filters for the wifeys Rav and I saw a couple maybe 4-5 used Tundras. But they are probably more than a new one with the market right now!
