    Hello all,

I am a new owner of a pre-owned 2008 Toyota Tundral SR5 5.7L truck. The dealer who sold me the car only provided a single key and fob. I would like to obtain a spare key but wanted to make sure I am purchasing the correct key for this vehicle.

The key has a small dot on the metal - does this mean it has to be programmed? Can I purchase a blank key on eBay with the small dot and have a local locksmith cut to match my current key?

That looks like a valet key and you may not be able to lock the glove box not the tailgate.. idk but you may need a new stealership key unless you don't really care about those.. you may have gotten screwed on this deal...

Thank you for your reply. If I don't need to lock the glove box, can I still use this key to duplicate it?

Any key you purchase online will not start your vehicle. It will need to be programmed. Not a cheap proposition.

You may want to see if your dealer will provide you with a second key and have it programmed at a discount, since you purchased the vehicle there.

Best to get a full functional key rather than a valet version.

As I’m writing this, I seem to recall that one cannot have a duplicate key programmed from the valet version.

If you plan on installing an auto start on the truck, then you may be able to start it and put a copy key in to be able to drive it. It will at the very least provide you with another fob (I used a viper 2 way on mine) and you shouldn't have an issue putting the copy key in and turning it to on as I have to to with mine when I get in. There are people that know way more than me on this forum that may be able to weigh in on that idea.

Thank you guys for your input and help! I was able to find a local locksmith that works with car keys and he provided me with an original (non-valet) Toyota key and programmed it for me.

I just bought an OEM Fob and Key, and took them to an Automotive Locksmith for programming. The OEM fobs say TRW on the back, at least for my 2010. OEM keys generally have a Toyota logo. The auto locksmith programmed the chip in the key and the fob. Cost to program was $100.00, think I paid around $35 for the fob and key. I checked with the local dealer, they said they’d program both for $150.

Interesting, this is the 2nd car I've brought to them, and they never asked me for proof of ownership.

Which brings up the question: is the new key somehow programmed in the absence of the vehicle or is the vehicle programmed to accept to key?

Did your locksmith have to access your vehicle in the process of programming the key? More specifically, did they have to put your original key in the ignition and then the new key?

On a final note, I hide a “locked myself out” key on my vehicle but it is an unprogrammed key so the door can be opened but vehicle can’t be started. My dealer cut the key at no charge but did require proof of ownership.

I didn't watch what he was doing with the key and ignition, but was told they need the vehicle to program the anti-theft chip in the key. I don't know about the fob. I was at their brick 'n mortar shop, but he did everything out of a small Ford Transit van, so they can easily come to you. I'm sure a dealer would have asked me for ID and a registration.

Next time I test drive a new Porsche GT2, I'm bringin' it to the locksmith so I can have my own key!

Also the locksmith can supply the key and fob, but it will probably be aftermarket. Not a big deal, but I like OEM when available.

I did bring an extra key to be cut and programmed, just to have it. He cut it, but told me something was wrong with the chip in the key, and no matter what he did, his software was not able to program it. It works great on the door, but it won't start the engine.

This is the fob I got. $25 used, on the ebay.

Anyone know how to program the key fob/remote? I also have a 2008 limited with vip security (with factory remote). No matter what I tried, I can't get into program mode manually. I even went as far as getting a Techstream setup and still unable to locate where to program the fob/remote. Under immobilizer menu, all I see is 'Customize' 'Key registration' 'Immobilizer Code Reset' and 'Transponder Code Erasure' As far as I know, none of the option is for key fob/remote programming.
