Window trim pieces

Hello,

Has anybody ever installed these? How much of a pain are they? What are the clips for, does it come with that fake chrome piece underneath to snap in? I was trying to take off the rest of the rubber on there as it was peeling and ended up scratching up the "chrome" underneath.

I just did mine a few weeks ago. The clips help hold it in place. It doesn't come with anything chrome. The new ones are solid black.

It wasn't too bad to install. It just takes a lot of force to pop off the old ones. I got free shipping by ordering through Toyota's parts program.

 

You could tape off and shpray paint or bedliner on the existing ones after a good prep sand and wipe down.

 

Oh so these just clip in where the chrome trim currently is. Perfect. The picture helped a lot. Thank you!

 

I don't know if your truck is different but for me, there was no chrome trim. Are you sure what you are seeing isn't the area where the black rubber coating wore off after 18 years? I've seen other trucks where the black wears off and under it appears chrome. Just make sure you take your time and line it up correctly because once you push it in place, you likely won't be able to fix it.

Yessir. It was black originally. You'll have to remove the door panel and pry that old one off. It helps if you have a wide pry tool to spread out the force.

As PHM suggested, paint them where they sit.
I prepped and bedlined mine in place, pretty easy.
Rough them up with sandpaper, isolate with tape, apply adhesion promoter or primer, spray with bedliner. Perfecto.

 

I want to do it this way, but it seems like prep on these is a bitch, I have large hands and it seems impossible to get down into the valley to clean all the old top layer off.
Another reason to buy new, is the felt wears down over time and then allows more dust and dirt down into your window

I bought our 4runner in Sandy Ego, and it only took maybe 4 months in the desert to dry rot the back window sweep and the driver(most used windows) when I replaced with oem you could tell a big difference in the felt thickness

 

Most of my top layer was non-existent, pretty much down to chrome. For me it was much easier to prep and coat rather than remove and replace.

 

I had to chuckle when I read this. I too have large hands... it's a blessing and a curse. We should high-five and shake the earth.

 

As with everything in life, different strokes for different folks. While I did consider the paint method, it was a personal decision after 17 years to go back new OEM. In this case, it is now new and my wore out felt that window slides on is now water resistant wise....YMMV ! Similar to our head units, some wish to go new HU and others wish to stay original and add limited amount of features to their orig HU....as the world turns !

Second what Erik said....patience ! I happen to be in process of doing mine and being anal, I went as far as removing mirror due to trim extends under mirror by a good 3 inches, placing new trim in place loosely and marking the clips location with neon sharpie. I have a plastic putty knife which helps with initial removal. Just bop that sucker and comes off with out marring truck paint.

 

Haha mine are small compared to my dads, who was a wood worker, we called his banana hands. Mine aren’t on that level yet, but I use my hands for a living(not the same as PHM) so I’m sure I’ll get there one day

 

I normally agree with the painting option. I did that with the rest of my black trim. But it's not always a permanent fix and all that taping off takes a lot of time. Also, my fear was that they will eventually discontinue this part and I would be stuck with this trim forever, with the felt getting worse and worse over time.

Yeah I can see the dust being a problem in the desert. Someone else was complaining about water getting in there which happens even with new ones. New ones are nice. Just offering another alternative here. Works well.

 

Did you also have to remove the mirrors to install?
I was not sure about that part.
I plan on still keeping my tundra long term. Whatever it cost. I cant find anything brand new that I would like as much. And like others said. These parts are cheap as parts go. And may not be able to get them later. Already I have noticed a lot of parts have been discontinued.

I had to on my access cab but someone with a DC said they didn't have to, which doesn't make sense to me. On my AC, the trim sits slightly under the mirror.

 

As Erik alluded to, on the DC it extends under our/my mirror a good 3”....but it was 2 fold for me, wanting not to cut trim to barely fit under and also to figure mirror out as far as how to get the triangle separated from mirror for repainting that grey ugly crap. The rest of window trim, lock actuator comes in tomorrow, so I’ll be hopefully spending a few days installing trim and painting. This truck will be in family for awhile IF either grandson wants it and besides, all I got is time being retired....keeps mind active.

I've already got micro scratches on the side glass from the grit that gets caught in the felt.

 

Pretty sure my felt is non existent.
The 4runner ones were so bad they detached from the main molding and would go up and down with the window.

 

Actually, this is a valid concern. I'm about to start buying stuff now the 4th gen trucks are coming out. I've already noticed a couple of interior trim parts that've turned up discontinued the last two-ish years. One was a center console part that was around 4 months ago and discontinued as of 2 weeks ago.

These window felt/trim bits, and I think the 3rd brake lamp assembly will be the big ones for me. I've been trying to remember the other annoying parts that've discontinued on other vehicles. Interior door pulls are one. The plastic rod clips used for for door and tailgate locks and handles.

 

Our secondary hood release has been discontinued.

 

I ordered that 3rd lamp assembly a year or so ago, not cheap; and put LEDs to hopefully not burn up the reflector……..and now I have a cap that blocks all that light…..

 

Does it come with a gasket or is it not needed?

 

It did come with a gasket, and yes it was definitely needed. The old gasket pretty much crumbled as I pulled the light out

 

This is what I wrote down in my notes a year or two ago.

81570-0C010 => 3rd brake light complete assembly
81572-0C010 => 3rd brake light gasket (housing to lens, not housing to roof!!)
81571-0C010 => 3rd brake light lens cover

EDIT: The gasket is ONLY for the lens cover to seal to the truck.
