I'm just glad it didn't break on the 10 mile drive from the sellers house to mine!

Yikes! That would have been terrible. When I bought my truck, before driving 8 hours home, I just had the local stealership change the belt, water pump, thermostat and a cooling system flush just to be safe before the trek home.

I suspect that may be the original belt. :eek2:

I bet it's original. We had one member claim his Sequoia had the original belt at 350k.

I've done a few belts over the years on different vehicles, always at the recommend intervals, and they have always looked like new almost. That is the first time I've ever seen one look that bad. I bet it's the original belt as well. You dodged a bullet.

When I did my belt last summer, the truck had 174K on it and the belt looked just like yours. The date code on the water pump was late 2000, which corroborates the originality of the belt.

When you swap out yours, take a look at the water pump and see what the date code is.

I started sweating just looking at that. We are a fraction of a MM of an expanding crack away from another motor rebuild thread. Once you get this taken care of you might consider buying a lottery ticket as well.

When I had my first gen I changed the belt within a couple of hundred miles of the recommended interval. Sometimes I'd do it early to avoid having to do it in poor conditions or under pressure. I got 500,000+ miles out of that girl and she was eager for another 500,000. These engines are fully capable of that kind of service life if they are maintained properly. I always looked at the belt change as an opportunity to swap those parts out that typically leave a motorist stranded. My first gen Tundra only ever left me stranded twice and those were my fault for not paying attention.

I need to check mine. It was supposedly done about 50k ago, but I don't recall really looking at it. I think I had the cover off once. I just can't remember what it looked like so it's as if I never looked at all.

That belt was so bad, the tensioner was making a rattling sound at idle because the belt was flopping around. And I drove a 240 miles round trip to Bozeman and back at 75 mph the week before I changed it. I dodged a major bullet

Just curious if anyone knows about how many miles they tend to break at.

I’m getting ready to do mine. I’m at 270k and I also have a pulley whine so I’ll be replacing a lot of things.

I believe the suggested interval is every 100k. Do you know if yours has ever been replaced?

The Car Fax report showed it was changed at 180k.

Is there an inspection cover for the belt, or does the plastic housing come off easily? Maybe I need to Google

There are a few 10mm bolts holding the cover in place on the passenger side. Just remove those and you can slide the cover back enough to see the condition of the belt.
