    I have a 2012 tundra crewmax.
Last night I noticed my truck was doing something weird. When I take the key out of the ignition about 5 seconds later all the lights cut out the door lock buttons don't work headlights don't work pretty much nothing electrical will work but as soon as I put the key in everything goes back to working normally. Anybody got any idea what's going on and how to fix it?

I would look into any aftermarket alarm? wiring, or relays that control delay, or maybe ignition switch.

Maybe a problem in the ignition switch itself? Have you tried moving the key around in the ignition when its running/off to see if it replicates the problem? That's what I would try first, good luck.

Your real concern should be that you can remove the key with the engine running.

Your key or your ignition switch is worn out. I would bet on the key. It was a shocker the first time it happened on my 4Runner.

My problem happens after I turn the truck off and take out the key.

In the "OFF" position, no electrical except the ECM should be powered up on shut down, key in or key out. I believe the ECM stays powered for a short period of time until everything is shut down, then it also "goes to sleep".

In the "ON" position, the ignition and other necessary systems should be powered up, but the key SHOULD NOT be removeable.

If you have a spare key, try it first to see if a less-used key will fix the problem. If the newer key fixes the problem, you can drive it with that one until it wears out.

If you don't have a spare key, you could have new one cut from the existing key for a trial. This will allow you to determine if the key remains removeable in the "ON" position.

BUT, if the truck is equipped with an immobilizer security system, it will not start if the new key does not have a chip that matches the ECM. If the truck has an immobilizer, you're probably better off to proceed directly to replacing the ignition switch and key assembly, because the chip-matching headache and expense will be the same.
