I’d buy a vehicle a few years old and let someone else take the hit, and pay cash for a vehicle well below my means.

 

If only Tundras actually worked that way... I completely understand what you’re saying, though, and I would agree with you about 95% of the time. I’ll have mine paid off well before the 6 year mark, and last I’d checked the book value is pretty close to the same as the day I bought it. It’s worked out just fine in my situation.

 

Wrong- the incentive you will receive is the incentive being offered the month you pick up the truck, not the month the truck was ordered - if the incentive increased from the month you ordered the truck and you didn't get it would you be ok with that?

 

I’ll toast to the 95%.

I prefer the 0% loans. I do at times lease, but normally wait for a 0% offer to purchase.

Some folks like, some dont, I get it. Has anyone looked at GM length of financing? Up to 120 months, I about fell over when I read that one.

As mentioned before, consider something used. Between Carmax, Carvana and Vroom one has about 300 Tundras to choose from.

 

I hear ya. Things are getting nuts, do not go price lumber whatever you do, its insane right now.

 

An example to contradict the depreciation thing (right now...times are different) Bought a 2019 rav4 hybrid xse in sept 2019. Brand new paid $33,500. Drove it 22,xxx miles and traded it in on a 2021 Highlander hybrid platinum in January 2021. So 17 months, 22,000 miles and was given $30,500 when I traded it in.

 

I feel for you. I know folks trying to build that have put everything on hold, the loans they were approved for now will not cover the actual costs.
Its insane, I have heard rumblings through other yards that they are expecting 7/16 osb to hit $64 a sheet soon. We are at $41.15 as of yesterday. Its hitting my roofers hard.

 

Feeling pretty smug right now, bought at the beginning of the year and the incentive was $2500. (But wait! Dealer had added on a bunch of stuff like tint, paint sealer, vinyl door/hood protectors, USB cables, emergency services that seemed to erase the savings.) IMO incentives & subsidies tend to end up in the dealer's pocket one way or another.

And yes I'll finance a vehicle if I get a good rate. Do I have cash? Yes I do, but OTOH I've seen the stock market do very well and I'd rather fund my Roth IRA with any extra cash I have laying around.

So if I borrow 30k at 2.19%, what is the cost? $1700 over 5 years. Let's take my credit card cash back during that period (4% restaurants, 3% gas, 2.5% everything else), $3k/year. $15000 in tax free money just for buying all the stuff I normally do. That little interest on the Tundra doesn't seem so daunting any more. I think Ramsey is against credit cards as well, sometimes he's a little too black & white. His advice is great for those addicted to spending but auto loans are the cheapest money you'll find.

 

No i can afford it its just with the incintive i was looking at a low 800 a month and now its 8n the mid to high 900 a month. I was saving 1000 a month since last August to get a tundra. I had to get one earlier than i wanted due to the supply issue, it just bugs me at the insanity of paying over 900 for a vehicle when my first car was a 300 dollar payment 10 yrs agao(also was my first new car) im a frugal person and am blessed to be in a good financial situation. Probably wouldnt mind it so much if i didnt just spent a shit ton on my house remodel. I could have bout 2 tundras with that.

 

And THAT is why incentives are now gone. IT's business ladies.

I financed my truck at 2.9% for 72 months even though I have enough to pay cash for it. I did that because I am earning double digits on that money. At any point, I could pay it off, or pay it way down, or whatever. I also paid a large down payment to make sure I will never be upside down. I have those options because I have been blessed to have had good counsel in my younger years when I could barely make ends meet.

Back then, I never financed a car for more than 3 years, and never bought new. I learned very early that cars NEVER go up in value (unless you get very lucky, which is stupid to depend on). I don't do everything Dave Ramsey says, but this just makes sense. If you're spending a lot of your money on stuff that just goes down in value, you will NEVER get ahead. You will ALWAYS be trapped by your payments.

 

You can feel bad for the sub-$5000 deck I was going to build which has now jumped to $10K minimum. We're not building it. I'll live with going up and down a dozen steps and standing in snow/dirt rather than pay these extortionist prices.

 

At the rate things are going there may not be a good time in the foreseeable future to build anything. That said my new home build is almost done and yes the price of supplies did go up.

 

A couple years ago I got a quote on our gravel driveway to Concrete. It was about $9000 cad, we passed on it

The other day I got a quote on a cheaper option of Asphalt, it was $9800 cad, we passed on it.

I'm going to re gravel it myself, with a shovel and the kids, hopefully for under $500, including edging.

Luckily, we don't have any professional landscaping or renovations planned, as we got them done a few years ago.

 

That surprising that asphalt hasn't gone up in price too much. Labor costs are insane and that's what racks up the price of a project. I didn't even bother getting quotes for building the deck when we started designing it. I'm a tradesman. I'll build it myself. $5K was our estimate for all materials and the one contractor I'd have to bring in to drive the screwpiles in. We were going to do it last summer but I got laid off in the spring, so we put off the deck project to this year. Big mistake. Material pricing has doubled. 2"x10"x12' pressure treated boards are now almost $50 each. I'm at $1000 just for joists at today's prices. Fuck. That.

 

People actually pay $800 + a month for a vehicle? That’s a house payment dude. If you don’t have $$$ to put down and get yourself a lower payment then it doesn’t sound like you should get it in the first place the way things are going right now.

 

This has always been my thought too. But some people have to have it now....or in 96 months of payments in some cases.

@Outbound I think asphalt has gone up too. I'm guessing if we had gotten a quote a couple years ago, it would have been $5-6k.

 

I'd kill for an $800 a month house payment. Ours is about $2000 a month.

I paid cash for my Tundra but my last car payment was $500 a month for 60 months at 0%.
