Cold air intakes? What have you tried?

I have to admit it was like living in the zoo. Alligator section. Big ass snapping turtles. I'd go through 3 to 4 dress shirts each day depending on how many customers I'd have to see. I found out why golf course rates were half price in the afternoon that time of year. You could die from multiple lightning strikes. Fishing was good and the seafood. Locals were kuul.

 

Sorry, was not my intent, but unless you live in Florida, you have no idea how much it sucks....

 

I spent a week there.

Really it was between Florida and Cuba on a cruise ship. The straights. We flew into Fort Lauderdale and spent the night there, and then spent like a week at sea.

I know I don't count

 

Going on 37 years, Damn I'm old!!!! Being from philly used to play in snow dressed in shorts and a t-shirt. Now it gets in the 50's my ass is cold...but it is still tolerable in shorts. Hopefully only a couple more years here, I could be so lucky.

 

This thread has air boxes, some angry people, big hands, sweaty people, and even alligators...no one is to blame, its just another great thread here at Tundras.com.

When I was a kid in Brooklyn, after the snow plows ran through the street we would make tunnels on both sides, pile up snowballs at different areas of our forts and then have at it. Every body was gettin some, cars & trucks, mailman & cops too, the cops don't like getting hit with snowballs though

Yes. This is one of the 2 (two) I mentioned to you the other day. They are not in the FSM. The other is one is on the pass side adjacent to the main ground to firewall.

What is considered cold air?

 

I don’t know as I am just a Hand Model with really good looking hands.

 

Has anyone ran the stock setup and monitored intake temps, with something like Torque Pro, then installed a conventional aftermarket CAI and seen if there were any changes? I bought my 1st Gen with a K&N CAI already installed, but the prior owner also gave me the stock the intake with the truck. Thinking about running this experiment.

Since taping those two half dollar sized holes and plugging the wire hole with foam it seems to me parked/at idle IAT temps are a little lower. Short window of test reading at this point. Again, trucks 20 years old and shes lasted this far so how much can it help? Its fun seeing the little changes though.

Doesn’t matter when up at speed as that Intake Air tends to remain the same as outside air (a little higher but close) with the higher/fresh air flow.

I also Toy FIPG’d the Intake Pipe to Box Connection which has to make some type of hot air difference.

 

If we're being honest with each other, this is probably true and it doesn't matter what anyone does. The only result from an intake change will be that of sound. Any performance change, good or bad, will be so small as to be negligible.

 

Likely, but my intake does sound much meaner. Some days I can't tell if I'm hearing more exhaust or intake noise on the ramp to the highway. Noise is like 1/5th of the sensory experience haha.

 

Totally agree. It's the only reason I haven't ditched the CAI and reinstalled the stock setup. The CAI not being worse and I think sounding better is good enough for me.

 

Yeah. My MO on the truck has been doing small little improvements (OEM Plus) in an organized fashion. They all add up to an Optimized Goal. I’m not looking for the Magic Bullet Approach because their isn’t one. The cool thing is I have the benefit of reading others past successes and failures over the years to guide.

The truck is what it was designed. Maintenance and small improvements with an eye to the future are the goal.

It will be interesting to see your feedback on the two types.

 

I remember you doing this a while back and saying it was louder. I can imaging that intake noise reverbing back in through the Blower Motor Cone.

 

It's not as loud as you'd expect, but it does sound meaner. One of these days I'll replace the ribbed tubing which will hopefully solve the whistling pete intake and then I'll post a video. Right now my phone would likely just reproduce the whistling.

 

Within the past couple weeks I’ve gone from RC CAI to Stock with K&N to SABM with K&N back to RC CAI. When driving temps are all the same. Around +4F of ambient temperature. Stopped the CAI begins to suck in hot air faster due to not being in a box. But eventually they all get to the same temperature. I’ll be keeping my RC CAI because I like the growl.

Temps were monitored through my Pioneer radio with Maestro hooked up to the OBD2
